During the years I was researching religions (an effort which resulted in my confirmed apostasy), I visited a large church called "The Church of the Open Door." The building itself covered about 20,000 square feet, and was easily 80 feet tall (not including the steeple). The sanctuary was the size of an aircraft hangar. The "sermon" was 15 minutes of praising their gods and 45 minutes of begging for money. I left, thinking they needed to rename the place the "Church of the Open Wallet."
That some shlub in a Brooks Brothers suit was on TV telling you his god needs all your money is not surprising. What is surprising is there are people gullible enough to send him their money. Maybe not surprising as much as disappointing. I keep hoping we're becoming smarter than that. Obviously not.

I know when I say this I will get a lot of thumbs down, but here it goes any way. In the bible is says to give tides, but it doesn't name monetary as being the tides. I think too many churches put emphases on giving money TO THE CHURCH. When we need to giving more than just money.
If I'm going to give money, I'm gonna hand deliver it too a family that needs it. Not put it in a pot for someone else to decide that the church needs new decor!!!!

I believe in God and I read the bible but I don't go to church for this reason. Too many Church's are now run like a business.....

I would tend to be somewhat suspicious of TV televangelists, but it does say in Scripture that we should give the "firstfruits" of our "treasure, time, and talent". Not just what's left over after all of our earthly concerns. That doesn't always mean just cash money. For example, if you have knowledge and talent with computers and computer networks, maybe you could devote some of your time to help getting a local church "wired" and up and running with computers for aiding religious instruction or contact with fellow Christians over the Internet. Or donate some of your time to helping at a local soup kitchen for the needy.

If we truly show God that we think enough of Him to give Him the firstfruits of what is ours, He will return the favor. After all, it is God that is responsible for what we have in the first place.

Televangelists should be strung up by their testicles and paraded down the main street of ever town in the U.S. while being aired on national tv. Then all the money they stole from the desperate and credulous should be taken and used to build schools that teach people how NOT to be so desperate and credulous.

Not all churches are like that. God does not want your money, he wants nothing from you at all. He does not judge you by the amount in your bank, to him everyone has the same self worth. God Bless.

Have you seen the ones who say being in debt is a sin?

Didn't their messiah say, upon taking a look at a coin with caesar's face on it "give to caesar was it caesar's, to god what is god's"? I believe so, in Matthew 22:19-21 to be exact. So if god wanted your money why isn't his face on it?

A closed fist can neither give NOR receive.

I tithe to my church and when I was about to be evicted during a period of unemployment, my church paid my entire rent and never required that I pay them back.

Who can you count on?

Are you implying that some people would try to use the faith and beliefs of others for financial gain? Hmmmmm....Well it's better than starting wars in God's name.
