I wouldn't start the new job until after I have my baby and finish maternity leave, because it's full time and right now I work part time, so I wouldn't start until June 2008. I told the new potential employer I want to take the position, but how often should I contact them, he said we'll stay in touch, I called him last a couple weeks ago, I see him on a regular basis because he works with my company, should I wait for him to call me next. I just don't know cause it's so far off.

My thought is that you are in a good position due to the fact that you see him on a regular basis. Best to go ahead and get something in writing from him stating that he is officially offering you the job with the particulars (start date, salary, benefits package, etc), and then I would check in with him probably about once a month (seeing if there are any new developments, talk about purchases for your office such as furniture).

Dont annoy him since your start date is so far off but make sure that you have your signed contract that guarantees you the job next June. Since you see him regularly, there's no need to call him. Just make mention of the fact when you see him that you are looking forward to June.

I would pop an e-mail to him evey 4 weeks, just telling him Hi I am just checking in and making sure things are good. I am looking forward to joining your team this June."
