In my first aid kit, I have....
a non battery operated flashlight, various sized bandages, two cold packs, gauze, scissors, medical tape, glucose tablets, neosporin, bactine, a solar blanket for each person in my family, cayenne pepper (you can put it into your socks and it will warm your feet), tweezers, different sized finger splints, alcohol wipes, a arm sling, bug bite cream, canteen, shrill whistle, small unbreakable mirror, small branch cutting wire, matches in a water proof baggie or plastic container with some tissue strips to start a fire ,and a leatherman multi-tool. This should get you through just about any emergency.

Usually what comes with it is good. I would suggest some extra gloves since most first aid boxes usually only come with one set. You might always want to take extra stuff that isn't in there like flashlight, food, water, blankets etc for just in case.

Whether you are planning a long distance drive, day trips or just use the car for carpools and shopping, a first aid kit is an important item to bring along. Use the checklist below to plan your kit, and to keep it stocked. A tackle box or art-supply box works well for storing the first aid supplies. They are lightweight, have handles for easy carrying, and generally have trays or swing out sections for storing small items.
* First aid manual, including basic CPR instruction
* Stretch bandage
* Adhesive bandages
* Sterile gauze
* Adhesive tape
* Cotton balls
* Antiseptic wipes/creams/solutions
* Burn ointment
* Petroleum jelly
* Antibiotic cream
* Hydrocortisone cream
* Calamine lotion
* Antihistamine cream such as Benadryl (children's version, too, for bug bites)
* Large, square piece of material to make a basic sling
* Tweezers
* Sharp scissors
* Razor blade or knife
* Latex gloves
* Instant cold packs
* Prescription medications in child-proof bottles
* Syrup of ipecac (talk with your doctor about use)
* Thermometer
* Acetaminophen and aspirin (never give aspirin to children under 12)
* Antacid
* Water bottle
* Saline solution for contact lens wearers
* Eye wash
* Moist towelettes/wipes
* Soap
* Insect repellent
* Sunscreen
* Small mirror
* A list of emergency phone numbers
* Medical history in case of emergency
Miscellaneous Items to Have in the Car:
* Cellular phone
* Tire changing equipment/spare tire (properly inflated)
* Small set of tools
* Jumper cables
* Can of tire inflator and sealant
* Unopened cans of motor oil, antifreeze and brake fluid
* Jug of water for radiator
* Flares or reflectors
* Small fire extinguisher
* Flashlight and extra batteries
* Rags or paper towels
* Window cleaner
* Blanket
* AAA card
* A few extra dollars and spare change
* Small sewing kit
* Sunglasses
* Plastic bags
* Identification, registration and insurance cards

Usually all you need are a few of the basics like bandaids, antibacterial ointment, plastic gloves, needle for splinters plus a tweezers, alcohol wipes. Unless you are in some remote location this will be enough to get you by until you get to a hospital or home. If you need anything bigger, you need to call 911.

Ya know the regulars, band aids, gauze, those little packets of antibacterial wipes, maybe a little prepaid fully charge cell in there, waterbottles, and foods that don't expire quickly!

Plasters, all sizes of bandages, an eye wash bottle with sterile water, safety pins and cleaning swabs should be ok for most common accidents. Hope this helps ..........
