The Lord brings the verses in the Messiah to my mind *all* the time. In fact, when my husband and I are reading the Bible together at night, I often sing some of the lines from it as he's reading if the line is contained from the passage we're reading. (I know, I know, annoying). He has used this so much to help me hide scripture in my heart.

Anyone else love it like I do? Okay, more like obsessed with it? ;) If so, do you have other recommendations for musical pieces like The Messiah? :)

While I've sung parts of the Messiah in choirs, I've never gotten to sing the *entire* thing before an audience. This is a life goal of mine! :)

"Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee" (Ps. 119:11).

That's why! Meditating and memorizing scripture moves it from our heads to our hearts.

I love it! I love "For Unto Us a Child is Born," and " Pastoral Symphony" but of course my all time favorite is "Hallelujah Chorus." I get chills up and down my spine when everyone stands up to sing it.

I am so blessed - I have sung the soprano solo parts of this a couple of times, and once I had the joy of being the harpsichordist for a performance with full orchestra. Where I was sitting, the waves of sound just washed over me, and it was an amazing experience.

I think I'll go listen to some of "Messiah" right now!!

If you like that, you might also like the Bach "Magnificat."

I LOVE it. Every year at our church we have the "Messiah Sing-along"...which anyone can attend, not just members of the church - I am a Mormon by the way...
The sing a long is so fun... volunteers who play orchestra instruments and also a pianist go practice and then they play for the audience certain songs while we all sing. There are usually a few soloists as well that just volunteer... it's really fun. Sometimes kind of hard to keep up with all those 16th notes though, some of those songs are hard to sing. I have the CD of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's recording of most of the chorus songs, no solos and it is amazing.
Anywho, it's beautiful music and I love to listen to it... Handel was obviously an amazing composer.

I am an atheist and I love the Messiah. When I was growing up my mother sang in a choir and every Christmas she would drag me along to hear it. Cheaper than a babysitter I guess. Well, it sunk in and now I can't go through December without listening to it. :) Handel also wrote another beautiful piece called Dixit Dominus. It is sung in Latin however, but the harmonies are beautiful.

I've sung the soprano solo with the Pittsburgh Symphony. There are tons of classical pieces but all of them are going to be a bit different. Dvorak Te Deum is glorious as is the Brahms Requiem as in Mahler's Resurrection Symphony..... I could keep listing.

An interesting note about Handel is the amount of composing he did with Castrati in mind; much of his work is not sung today because of such a focus.

While I like The Messiah, I do tend to associate it with Christmas.

My favourite piece of music overall probably is "Dances of the Persian Slave Girls" by Mussorgsky.

I am an atheist and have gone to the sing a long Messiah a few times. Its a lot of fun to sing! In fact, I got asked to join the choir at the Baptist church where they do it. I politely declined. My favorite religious music to sing is Mozarts Requiem. It is amazing!

I've heard Yogini sing this soprano solo with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and she is absolutely wonderful! The orchestra and the rest of it is magnificent too!!!

The cocktail reception they have in the Heinz Hall after it's over is great, too. Going to see Handel's Messiah with full Pittsburgh Symphony, full Pittsburgh Opera, and that to-die-for spread afterwards is a real highlight of the holiday season, believe me!

I like the piece well enough. I tend to associate it with Christmas music - the good stuff.

Even though I'm an atheist, I have to admit that 'secular' Christmas music (from Frosty to Rudolph or anything that mentions Santa) is awful, horrifying stuff that makes my ears bleed, but the religious stuff is fantastic.

There is one sentence in your question that gives me pause: "hide scripture in my heart". I'm not meaning to be a smartass (for once), but why exactly do you have to hide scripture in your heart? I can understand why you'd want to hold it, but why hide it?

um, when i lived in kansas city, i used to go over to independence to what the mormons call "jesus' landing pad", the mormon temple , where the tabernacle choir performed that every year at christmas. i like the music, and i really enjoy the spiritual feeling i got when i went there. i guess some things like that can cross over belief systems, especially music, because i am an atheist and truly like it.
