The only Playstation 3 models that can play PS2 and PS1 games is the 20GB, 60GB, and 80GB models. On November 2, the 40GB PS3 is coming out and it will not be compatible with PS1 and PS2 games.
Also, the 20GB, and 60GB PS3's have the best compatibility because they have a special chip(emotion engine) inside of them that allows them to play PS1 and PS2 games. The 80GB model doesn't have the chip in it, it uses software to be backward compatible, and can't play as many PS1 and PS2 games as the 20GB and 60GB models can.
Also, the only place that you might find a 20GB PS3 is online because they aren't been produced anymore, and the 60GB models aren't being produced anymore either because Sony replaced it with the 80GB PS3, but they can be found in stores still. Soon only the 80GB PS3 and 40GB PS3's will be the only ones that you can buy.

They should be with the first generation PS3's, but I read just recently that Sony is coming out with a cheaper, stripped down model (with some different featuers) of PS3 that will NOT be backwards compatible with PS2 games. Stick to the originals and you should be fine.

THe 60 gig is 99% capable --THe 80 gig is currnetly 88% and they are adding new games to the capability list everyday. and the only machine that is not if the 40gig. So get the 60gig, 20gig , or 80 gig ps3.
