Which one can truly claim the title of 'First' ?

I lived in a town that had several first baptist churches. How about that?

Yes but if they called them in numerical order that would get confusing:

Richard: Hey, Bill where do you go to church?

Bill: Over at the 15,837th Baptist church.

First Baptist church moniker refers to the first church established in a town or region, its got nothing to do with being "first".

It simply refered to the First one in any particular town... there are seconds and thirds and fourths also... nowdays it has been adopted by some as a "denomination"... but that was not the reason for the origin... just the first "baptist" or "Christian" one in that town.

this is traditional and can be researched in funk and wagnalls..
United Methodist is also all over the country
