Interesting thing about turning the other cheek:
Matthew states whoever strikes you on your RIGHT cheek. . .
To do this a right-handed man would have to hit you backhand. This is a strike like you would give to a slave. What Jesus is in effect saying is that your response to your assailant should be, "You hit me as a slave. Do you dare to hit me like an equal?" Then you can rumble? There's a lot of cultural implication to this that we might not understand. . . .

An eye for an eye was under the old covenant. We are now all saved by grace and are no longer subject to paying the price for our sins, Jesus already has. We as Christians are to turn the other cheek to allow God to deal with our enemies. That doesn't mean that we are to stand by and be a coward, but to let God fight our battles. Of course we must stand against the forces of evil, but that's it STAND. All we have to do is stand still and let God conquer it for us.

Both.
"An eye for an eye" means that if somebody gouges your eye out, you have a certain claim to gouge out one eye, but not two. "Turn the other cheek" means that you have even more right to stop bloodshed.
You might just poke him with your thumb, or slap him on the cheek, or you might just stop and forgive him. Jesus seems to recommend this as the only solution, and he's probably right, but every rational person can see the value of adding "kindness" to your arsenal of ways to deal with people.
As they said in the old "Kung Fu" TV series, (I might have mussed up the order) "Return kindness, always with kindness; return cruelty, sometimes with kindness."

You should avoid evil, but if it is standing in front of you and you can't get around it or away from it then you shouldn't resist it.
edit:
That is, you shouldn't resist it up to the preservation of your life. You should preserve your life.
