Check it against the Bible, can the words of whomever be validated in the Bible? Are they adding to, or taking away from the Bible to make their point? Discernment is a gift of the Holy Spirit, some are better than others at it, either way the Holy Spirit reveals truth to all who ask.

Okay, first of all, line up what they are saying to the Word of God. If it conflicts with God's Word, then it is false. However, also ask the Holy Spirit to reveal it to you. If you feel peace inside bout it, sure. If there is an uneasiness, then just maybe it is wrong. Jesus said that "my sheep know my voice". Learning to understand and discern is a process. But with the Holy Spirit and the Bible as your guide, you will quickly learn how to discern between the things of God and crazy stuff.

If what is being said is not scriptural, I pay no attention. It is developed as you study the Word of God.
Many times, if you happen to hear a particular person more than one time, you can discern if the messages they bring follow a trend or they seem to be taking shots in the dark, perhaps to hold the audience/congregation's attention.

Discernment only comes from God. The Holy Spirit will guide you to all truth. I ask God to lead me and guide me. I pray that the scales are removed from my eyes so that I may see things through His eyes and He will give you the gift of discernment. You will have this "intuition" about the person or situation to expose the truth.

Obviously, if it conflicts with biblical text it is not valid. Though the Bible alone is not enough for me personally. I rely on other research coupled with prayer and meditation.
Brightest Blessings

We call it the Prayer for Guidance and the Strength to Follow that Guidance. It is preceded by the Prayer of Meditation and is followed by the Prayer for Portection. For further details, please read The Healing Touch of God by Agnes Sanford.

Trust the Spirit of the Lord....i see you are in the position to be taught by Him in this now..and he will..He never speaks from both sides of His mouth, nor does he contridict Himself.. He is called the Spirit of Truth, therefore is no lie...Jesus talks about the Spirit in John..Paul talks about the gifts in Corinthians...and the Church in Ephesians...these should all be in "Unity", you will know in your heart by the Spirit...no doubt...and remember too, it is a "growing thing in the Lord.."and don't be afraid... :) and, please don't worry about things..He knows what he is doing, even if you are unsure at this time...OK? :)

The Bible is the final and only authority. If they contradict the Bible, then they are false, no matter whether they call themselves "father", "preacher", "pastor", or whatever.
