Does anyone know if there have been studies on the effects of ciggarette smoke in relation to air quality and pollution? If so, could you give a reference?

While I can't point you in the direction of a specific study I will say that it is an area that warrants attention from environmental scientists for several reasons. Air quality is just the tip of the iceberg so to speak.

1. Smoking creates particulate and thermal pollution in the air.

2. Smokers love to throw cigarette butts out the window, they are a constant source of litter. They clog up municipal wastewater systems and they take a long time to degrade if they do at all. They pose a hazard to wildlife and certainly don't make the world any prettier.

3. The process of farming the tobacco in the first place is highly dependent on petroleum based fertilizers, toxic pesticides and herbicides, and other factory farming techniques.

And the real kicker of it all, is that all of this energy is wasted, and all of this pollution is created for the sake of an activity that has no positive outcome whatsoever.
