He is not really being mean. Some cats get over-stimulated a lot faster than others. One of my cats does the same thing. Try counting the number of pets before he bites and then next time give fewer pets. You can also try watching for signs that he has had enough - end of tail slowly swishing or head turning to look at your hand. My cat has gotten better over the years. She has gone from allowing 3 pets to about 10 now. Sometimes cats will also give love bites...but those don't hurt. If this behavior is new for your cat, you may want to have a vet check him out to be sure there is nothing wrong. Don't be afraid to pet your cat....good luck.

Reading many of these answers, I'm amazed why people wonder why cats or any animal bites. They can't speak English obviously, so they're limited to their communication skills. Either when he's done being petted, is sore, or you're doing something that may not feel good, he may bite. Or hiss, or growl, or swish his tail. Cats swish tails when they're irritated.
Don't pet him so long the next time.

That's probably just his way of saying that he's had enough and thats why he leaves after he bites you. My cat does this too. I will pet her a while and she enjoys it and then she bites and scratches with her back feet. But she's not angry with me. She just doesn't want to be petted anymore.

He could have a sore spot that irritates him when you pet him. It would be a love/hate thing. Loves getting petted, hates that it hurts. He may also have fleas and you are nudging an itchy spot so he turns to chew on it but gets your hand instead. If it becomes too much of a problem, call your vet or animal shelter and ask them.

I honestly don't know, many cats do that, we have one. She's fine, then out of no where she turns into a you know what.
I think they decide that petting time is done and instead of just walking away they attack because you kept touching them..
With us we stop the attention once the look in the eyes changes.

It's a way for some cats to let you know that they've had enough petting and want you to stop. This behavior is most commonly seen in male cats, especially if they are intact.

He's over stimulated. Some cats don't handle too much attention well. Just born that way.
Also, he might be telling you he doesn't quite like the feel of what you're doing. Our cat did that until I got wiser as to what she likes. :-) Now she's a happy kitty, though I still watch those teeth. ;D
