Windows xp on my computer got a virus and it messed things up. I got rid of the virus but then windows didn't work very well. It let me log on and stuff but things like internet explorer did not work. So I tried to do a repair reinstall of windows. I used a friends disk and the key with that is on the sticker on my computer. Installation was going fine, then it asked me for the key, I input the key and it is not working. What do I do?

You can use any installation CD as long as you have your original serial that you said you have on the sticker on your computer. Those other replies have false information. What happens is that the online activation of windows doesn't work after the first time you had windows installed on that serial number. You have to do "phone activation," it's one of the options in activation. Just call the toll free number they provide you and follow instructions. You will then get a confirmation code and everything will be fine.

Not every CD matches every key, there are various version of the same XP, so unless the key used matches the version of CD, you not going to get very far.

You must use the same disk as your own PC. Your friend's disk will not work.
