I heard that rumour too. I own US PS3 in Europe, but had no guts to try that one out, so I use 500W 220->110V power converter.

I would honestly doubt it. The power cord and all internal components are only rated to carry 110v. When ever you put more voltage than a wire is rated they get hot, melt the insulation and possibly catch on fire so I would not try it.
