Vista and XP look different and Vista has more features like the aero effects, directX 10, and a better disk management that lets you partition your hard disk however you want without losing data. The layouts of the 2 are almost the same, so you will have no problem adapting to Vista. If you know how to use XP, you will know how to use Vista. Actually pretty much all the windows versions had the same layout

I have been using Windows since version 2.0. that is not a typo.

Not only that, but I have used windows in probably at least 30 languages in each version since win95, and I have trained others to do the same even if they don't speak the language.

There is not really that much UI difference for regular operations from one verwion to another.

Why? I tis not in anyone's bet interests for 500 million users to have relearn EVERYTHING ever few years.

the differences to the end user are mostly cosmetic. XP is ful of holes too, but most of the effort spent on VISTA was to improve the security model, and to be able to distribute fixes quickly.

Only stick with XP if your hardware is too old to support Vista, or you are completely aghast at any change at all.

And remember that MS does not support old systems forever. win98 and earlier are not supported anymore - it won't be long until win2000 joins it, and then XP is not far behind that.

frankly, the only vaguely nice things about vista are:
it has a nice feel
windows media center is great
it has good security
the thing is though, media center is nice, but media player works just as well, windows security is available for free on microsofts website, and there is a program that you can buy for twenty bucks that makes xp look like vista (this includes the sidebar and everything). just do this, instead of upgrading to vista - the only reason i have it is it was forced upon me when i bought my computer; xp wasnt an option.
