I am not sure how to describe it, but it looks like they dont do a full step but numerous small steps. Chinese American women don't do it, just the Chinese immigrants. And I am not being racist, it is just something I seen since I was a kid and never bothered to ask. Is it sexy or feminent in China?

interesting question, it may have to do with the past and how women's feet were wrapped and bound so shorter steps would been seen as more ladylike, I think it is the same in the west, we often say she walks like a man, I live in Shanghai and I must say that I really never noticed this before, I will keep an eye out for it

It's because in chinese culture, taking big steps is consider unladylike and too open...of course, being petite is also a reason since we tend to have short legs. And btw Jessica D, your source has to be double checked because that statement you made is way outdated. Chinese women have stop bounding their feet since the early 1900's.

My tiny daughter just began walking and a Chinese relative by marriage commented how she walks like a lady already. This post was helpful in understanding her comment. Thank you.

I don't mean to offend any woman, Chinese or not, as there are many different views and opinions on what constitute femininity (or masculinity for that matter), including socio-cultural factors, but I personally think that Chinese women (and most other East Asian women such as Koreans and Japanese) are extremely feminine in the way they conduct themselves in general, in their appearance and attitude.
OK, I am out of the closet...now you can call me a sexist Rice King...flame me now!

gee, Chinese women really get your attention. You observe how they walk closely and be able to make a comparison of how two groups of Chinese women walk.
Obviously, how they walk is very lady and shows people they are well behaved.

Years ago women had to wrap their feet very tight to stop them from growing. I don't think they continue with that practice.
I agree with you, I think they walk different, I would say it is a cultural thing or maybe it could be because they are very petite.,which I find it very feminine.

It's considered to be 'ladylike' to walk in small steps or not even lifting their feet. Japanese women do that, too.

It's sexy to me. Not all immigrants do it, either. Chinese women, though, are feminine and luscious.
