try introducing the idea of a fork or spoon... My daughter loves using silverware... and i love it too bc she no longer crams her mouth full of food. He may like using silverware bc it may make he feel like a "big boy"
Or maybe try giving him smaller portions... when he eats well and doesn't cram food in his mouth praise him.. he'll get the idea. My daughter learned how to do alot bc of praise. I've come to realize that positive reinforcement works very well with toddlers when you're trying to get them to learn how to do things!

Children love to mimic, so try making a big deal about the way you eat. Show him how you take only a little bit and make noises like yum, and over dramatized chewing. Say things like that's so good. Ask him to do the same thing. Make a game out of it so to speak. When he puts too much in his mouth tell him things like ouch and point to your throat. Maybe tell him "no, no that can hurt you" then show him how mommy eats. I have to do that with nearly everything with my son. He's a wild little guy and by appealing to his wanting to please mommy and his liking to mimic his sisters and I, I can keep my sanity! :)

Just remind him in a slow, calm voice, "slowly," "take it easy,"or "one at a time." He'll know what you mean by the way you say it. Then, SHOW him how you do it nice and slowly. Maybe before you even set his food down take a couple of bites of your own and show him how you take one bite at a time and slowly chew and swallow it...throw in some mm mm sounds and then encourage him to do the same. He'll eventually understand that he can take time to appreciate his food.

I guess you answered your own question with the aside qualification. You are putting too much food on his tray.

He's just experimenting..having his fun...just be grateful he's eating and learning to feed himself...it'll get to a point where he learns to eat right =) if he chokes on his food then you should worry, otherwise just give him reasonable quantities and watch him in amazement =)

give him something big, like an apple.
so he has to work to get each piece.
pear. piece of meat he has to really chew to get pieces off. a whole potato - can't fit that in your mouth.
this worked fine with mykids
