Or if it is money, why?

I didn't even try to look for a summer job until I was 17 and 18 and then again (more seriously at age 20 after I graduated and had some college).

My point is, at those ages I wasn't motivated to do it even though in my state you can get a summer job at 14, with a worker's permit and parent's permission.

Well I wasn't well off either but there's labor laws that say you can't work until you are a certain age and you can only work so many hours. When I was that age, I did chores and my allowance wasn't nearly as big as it was in high school. Kids are supposed to live off their parents and I don't think it should be held against you if you didn't have a job before you were 18 because finishing high school and going to college is really important. And employers should care about that more.

My main reason to get a job when I was young? So that I can get some experience and do something else when I was older. I knew that if I didnt have any work experience id be in a bad bind later on. I now have the pleasure of working with 18 year olds whove never had the job and you can tell easilly the difference between a "newbie" to the job market and someone who had a job for 3-4 years.

Well I was 16 when I got my first summer job as a farm hand. Oh, now that was work!!! I did not have to have a job, my grandfather thought it would be good for me to have something to do. He was right I made a little money, and it gave me something to do other than just sit around and do nothing and hang out all summer. Every summer until I was in my 3rd year of college I had a job. The good thing was that I am now covered under social security if I get disabled and if I have a spouse or a child they will get some to. I still have about 1 more credit to qualify for Social Security when I turn 65. But heck that’s only like 1 quarter of a year working. I think many do because their parents can not afford to buy them things like your parents did you are mine me. Many parents due to inflation and so on just do not have that kind of money. A dollar does not go as far as it once did in our nation. I think that maybe part of the main reason 13 and 14 year olds are wanting jobs. The other reason is they want to feel like they are really doing something. I mean hey, I didn't think I was really doing something until college. So it will give them a sense of usefulness. But what do I know it's been 14 years since I was 14. =)

I'm 15 and I'm trying to find a job for the money, but also to get out of the house, have some experience in a lousy job so im motivated to stay in school, and to meet new people. But mainly its for the money and not have to beg your parents to buy you things.

I'm not 13-15, but maybe not every 13-15 year old is as well off as you were when you were that age.

I think that it is the beginning of your freedom and the money helps you get a car and the things that mean something to you that mom and pop don't get for you.
