More than likely you will live on the ship at first. If you can afford to live out in town you can do that as well. Living in San Diego myself, I know that its really expensive. Depending on your rank I would establish myself first on a ship and look into getting your own place after about 6 months to a year, or after your first westpac. That will give you the opportunity to save money and be ready to move out when the time comes. Plus you will make lots of friends on the ship as well.

Depends on what base in San Diego that you will be stationed at. 32nd Street is crowded, but the trolley station is right outside the base. Coronado and North Island are further away, as is Point Loma.

If you are assigned to a ship, I will have berthing aboard. It is cramped, but you get used to it.

San Diego is a great city. I was never home ported there, but my ship pulled into North Island often and I have done several ATs there as a reservist.

Be careful in Tijuana and avoid the Otay Mesa. The Gaslight District is a very nice place and close to 32nd Street.

Be careful when you head to Tijuana. It's a fun place but you can get yourself hurt or arrested. Never go there except with a big group of friends. There is quite a bit to do in San Diego. Make sure you take the amtrac along the coast to Los Angeles. You'll have a good time out there. The only downfall is there are sooo many people. Thanks for your service!

well, right now all barracks that were set aside for shipboard sailors have been tuned over to families who were evacuated from the fires, so yes, at least at first you will only be living on board.
