It's just random.
No god, no heaven, no hell.
We are, as Dr. Carl Sagan so aptly put it; " a pale blue dot. A mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam."
And boy was he right. Again.

First, this is not just one mediocre planet orbiting one mediocre star. This planet is not only the one planet with life as far as we can see, but the only planet with all the necessary conditions to even make a life a possibility. And the sun aas well as the solar system we're in happen to be in the only known 'safe zone' as far as we can tell in any galaxy in the whole universe that we have been able to study at all. What I mean by 'safe zone' is that there are so many lethal conditions in every other type of galaxy and every other solar system in those galaxies that there is no way life could strive anywhere else... again I'm saying this far as far as we have been able to observe so far. But even if there are other planets with life somewhere, as a christian that does not alter my beliefs in anyway. I'm sure that God would care just as much about them as He does about us. I don't think any amount of life in the universe is too much for God to handle. Maybe another we seem so small in this humungous universe is because he wanted us separated from whatever other life might be out there.
If we are here long enough, someday we will have technology that can take us outside of our galaxy I'm sure. I believe He made the vast universe for us to infinitely explore. Also, he is showing us how incredible His creations are by how huge and amazingly complex it is. If we were just one planet among ten in a universe that was no bigger than our solar system, would we be nearly impressed with His work?
Also you must try (I realize it's pretty much impossible) to view it from God's perspective. The universe is not some huge vast realm that He knows nothing about. He knows everything about, and it is probably just like a beautiful painting to Him, in the sense that he is not intimidated by the size and complexity of His own creation. And the fact that we are so small compared to the rest of the universe makes no difference to Him either, why would would God care how much space we do or don't take up?
Some people, known as Deists, believe God created the universe and then left it to run on it's own, that He doesn't care either way about and really pays no attention to it. I think this is a foolish concept because if there is a God, He obviously is no moron. Why put any effort into creating something that your planning on having nothing to do with?

Has it ever occurred to you that while the universe may be vast, this plane of existence is not? That maybe this world is a drop of water in an ocean, and the attestation to the supreme love of God is that God loves each drop of water equally the way a parent (a good one) loves all their children equally?
But you 'know' God, however it is understood in the myriad of ways it is by innumerable cultures, most of which are to Christianity what a wise elder is to a child, doesn't exist, don't you, so then it probably wouldn't occur to you. Sorry to have wasted your time. My bad.
PS: When you've 'made up your mind' what you're really saying is that you have limited your mind.

I wish I could answer that question with all certainty.
A part of me believes in the supreme being, and the other part believes that it is all random.
The part that believes in the supreme being, doesn't believe in organized religion.
And the part that believes it is all random, understands fully the rationalization that you used in your question and agrees with it. I myself have always wondered along the same lines of thinking.

Humans have NO CHANCE of traveling to another star with a potentially habitable planet anytime in the next few centuries, and we have an EXCELLENT chance of screwing up our environment, and making the Earth uninhabitable for ourselves in that same time span.
If there were a god, and he really wanted us to thrive, it would make sense to make a few of these habitable planets within our reach. This is not what I would call an intelligently designed scenario, or a loving creator.

Who knows what God was thinking at the time. My theory is that he had a box of cosmic fireworks and we are one of the sparks in a big rocket, only we can only see the other sparks and not the rocket, or indeed the box where God got it out of or the igniting stick because he stepped back to a safe distance after lighting it

God didn't create a vast universe. He created a flat earth with a bowl of stars over it and a sun that rises in the morning and disappears below the earth at night.

Amazing isn't it. Think about it look at nature and how amazing it really is. How could all that creativity be so random. I watch Discovery channel and Natural Geographic and can't imagine how intricate all these tiny insects are and how delicate nature's balance is. Can only be created. Random-no way.

vast is a subjective experience. we could be one grain of sand on a beach.
but i too believe we aren't the 'center' of the universe, or that we're better than the animal kingdom, or etc...
our existence is just a blink in time compared to the universe. respect!

All that creativity seems like the product of evolution to me. if God had some foresight he would have known to create a few less animals as we would wipe out all the animals.

I believe everything in that universe out there was created for us who believe. We just don't know what God has planned for us as yet. We know that it is beyond belief or that we will never comprehend what great things God has in store for us, but one day God will make it clear.
