I was asked to participate in a charity walk for the homeless and hungry. My first inclination was to ask whether the homeless people will be participating in this walk or if they are going to sit on the street corner begging while the rest of us walk to raise money on their behalf.

Would it have been wrong to ask that question? Should I still ask about how and if the homeless are going to participate? Would it be improper to use this issue as a pre-requisite to determine whether or not I should participate myself?

I'm not sure how good a physical condition the homeless would be in or if they would have proper footwear for a distance walk. Most homelessness is due to physical or mental problems or substance abuse. If they would like to participate ,I would say to welcome them but charity donations dont usually have strings attached to them.

In this case, no I don't think it would be improper to ask, just be very respectful when you get an answer. The coordinator of the charity walk might tell you that they don't want them to participate due to certain illnesses they may have been exposed to, this would put others at risk, including yourself, but I see no harm in asking. For medical charities you probably don't want to ask. My ten year old cousin has Cystic Fibrosis and we walk at the CF walk every year, but he has to wear a mask and isn't allowed near other CF patients. CF patients can carry a rare bacteria that can kill other CF patients. I am sure that this is probably the case in other disease related cases. I hope this helps!!!

That actually is a smart question...another might be what is the charity actually doing with the money they raise. How will it actually help the homeless and hungry. I run a charity and always am proud to tell people how we spend their donations and the effectiveness of the program. Keep giving back!!

Wow. Heard it all I thought. Walking for the Homeless.

You should free to ask that question; just use tact.

Saw a 5k for Sydlexics last month. Honest! But I realize it is good for people to work together on problems.

It depends on the charity i guess. for example my sister in-law just got married and they needed all kinds of help with everything, and me and my wife did so much in fact alot of people gave so much. for example, their time and money while they just sat on their buts >:-( i was so mad. if it were my wedding i would be the first to pick up a shovel
