I have known about this for three years, but am not worried....

Ooooo we lose our ntsc signal.. I do feel bad for retirees and people who can't afford them, but they are getting a $40 coupon.

Personally I wouldn't buy a box myself.. I looked at the prices and for another 30-40 you can a dvd recorder with atsc built in.

This is a much better deal.

It doesn't REALLY worry me - but it does mean I'll have to spend a few more dollars in a couple of years to continue to watch television the way I've grown accustomed to.

My only concern is explaining to an elderly relative that she's going to have to learn to use a different remote control.

Your math needs a little work though. In Jan 08 a converter box will run about $20. That's a retail price of about $60 minus a $40 coupon.

The cheapest DVD recorder with ATSC tuner that I know of is $140.

That's a $120 difference. ...

I understand that Walmart has a new $200 DVD/80g HDD
recorder. I'm thinking that's a better deal than a $145 DVD only recorder.

I'm soooooooo happy for you that you aren't worried! What a relief. But what does this statement (there isn't a question, is there?) have to do with the TV consumer ELECTRONICS forum, where the discussion is centered around technical TV operational and electronics questions.
