Some people wrote a book that said he claimed to be. In the book, he is described as performing some "miracles" as evidence of this lineage.
Some other people found it to their advantage to establish elaborate organizations dedicated in part to convincing us that his claims were true, and some, but not all, of this teachings ought to be followed.
Over the years, some people have come to believe that the book tended to be more oriented toward stories to help people understand concepts, rather than something to be taken literally. Others seem to like to insist on literal interpretations of some parts of the book but not others, and often will change their view of those parts as time and circumstances unfold.
My money is on a remarkable man who inspired many, who helped invent a conceptual back story to help people understand his points. His words were probably embellished to make other points, and his legend grew and morphed over the time between his life and when the book was written.
But that's just me, I tend to think more logically than spiritually. Who's to say I am right and others are wrong? Certainly not I.

The historical evidence is pretty spotty, and most of it apocryphal and anecdotal. Tacitus mention him briefly, and also (many centuries later) Josephus, but neither gave a lot of direct evidence.
Probably the "historical" Jesus was a composite of a number of religious leaders who opposed Roman occupation of Semitic lands. The depictions of his life in the gospels, a lot of His sayings, and the "prophecies" he fulfilled indicate that he had a lot of rabbinical training, and may've been a "Pharisee" himself.
But I've a more relevant question. If you could really prove, beyond a doubt, the existence of any god or gods or Saviors, then what would be the point of religious faith? If something is proven, then it can be accepted as fact - there's no need to believe, if it's provable!!

I do not believe that Jesus is the Son of God. To find prove that Jesus is NOT the Son of God, why don't you watch some video's on YouTube? Search for "Sheikh Ahmed Deedat" on Jesus, as the Son Of God.

1 John 5:8-11 (KJV)
And there are that bear witness on earth: the Spirit [i.e. the Holy Spirit in believers lives], the water [baptism] and the blood [forgiveness through Jesus' atoning sacrifice]; and these three agree as one.
If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son.
He who believes in the Son of God has this wtiness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given of His Son.
And this is the testimony: that God has given us [believers] eternal life, and this life is in the Son.
So the believer receives real forgiveness, is impacted by baptism if he undergoes this rite, and receives the Holy Spirit, also eternal life. And all this is given by God only because Jesus is who He claimed He was. If he was just a man or didn't exist, nothing would take place.

According to eastern Orthodox church he is part of the holy trinity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Orthodox_Church
Where they got their evidence is based on the prophecy of the old testiment (book of ishah) and the song of the suffering servent whom was thought to be Jesus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suffering_servant.
There is also another branch of the Orthodox church when Egypt used to be a part of Greece which split around this time why? maybe because of claim?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coptic_Orthodox_Church_of_Alexandria
Christianity was based on Judaism http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judaism ,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Testament the old testament and Greek orthodox New testament http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Testament
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity#The_Trinity
other wise known as judeo Christan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judeo-Christian
Sort it out if you like, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Books_of_the_Bible
Judaism was based on Abraham http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham although Abraham came from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesopotamia and then you can go back http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cradle_of_civilization and back http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indus_Valley_Civilization and research stone age http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Asian_Stone_Age then on to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natufian etc. What is interesting is Chinese culture stated a Little right around the neolithic period as well a way from the Indus valley. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Neolithic_cultures_of_China.
Or you can just take it as it is, faith. There seems to be no concrete evidence other than writings that Jesus is the son of god.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messianic_prophecies_of_Jesusor for a a broader perspective on all of man kind in the early days http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synoptic_table_of_the_principal_old_world_prehistoric_cultures .
This is why it is belief, and faith. Some people like it this way.

People mark anybody after seeing their works/activities.He was really a noble person,so He can never be the son of devil,as God is the opp. of devil so Jesus was surely the Son of God.and don,t forget that he saved our life(from judgment of our own sin)instead of his own....a devil's son can never do this.there were many other evidences..you can get from Bible

Not even any evidence that passes historians scruitiny to verify that a historical religious Jesus even lived. Slow down.
Josephus and other historians who mentioned Jesus were born after Jesus supposedely died. Don't even get me started on those Roman documents :O
