On a whim, I decided it would be cool to breed my cats. I was originally thinking of breeding my two dogs together (rottie and a weimaraner) but decided against it, cats are easier. My cats are a tabby (2 years old, male) and some type of mix (stray, probably 10-12 years old, female). What do I need to look out for? How do I go about this? Will it cost me anything?

Honestly, I wouldn't do it. Your female is much too old, and if you're asking what to look for you haven't done your research. I doubt you know much about cats in general. Yes it will cost you something. First, if you DO manage to get your geriatric female pregnant, she will probably end up at the vet's office for some sort of emergency. Then, the kittens need their shots, worming, etc. If you have any sort of conscience whatsoever, it will also cost you emotionally knowing you just brought another litter of unneeded kittens into the world, and you can count on a litter at a shelter somewhere being euthanized because if it. You DON'T breed on a whim. It's irresponsible and stupid. The fact that you only decided not to breed your dogs because your cats would be easier tells me that you really don't understand just how excessive the companion animal population has gotten. I recommend volunteering at a local shelter. After a few hours, if you're smart, you'll decide against breeding your animals and take them to the vet to be neutered/spayed.

Tabby is a color, not a breed. Also, domestic cats should not be bred as there is already an overpopulation of them. Only pure cats of breeding quality should be bred, and you would never be able to obtain such cats. The key words are "breeding quality".. . not "pet" quality or "show" quality, but one step higher at "breeding" quality.

A 10-12 year old female is too old to breed. Also, cats are known for being bad first time mothers, and may abandon, harm, or neglect the litter. So be prepared for large vet bills, possible death of the kittens.

There is no money in cat breeding, especially for domestic like the ones you are talking about. You will be lucky to give away the kittens. Also, when you abandon kittens at a shelter, the shelter charges a fee, so that is not a cheap out either.

I know this isn't a serious question, but I decided to answer anyway for some person who may be considering this serious and want info.

Nobody should "hobby" breed kittens, especially domestic. Even with a pure bred cat, the person does not have a cat of "breeding quality", most likely just "pet" quality. The breeders reserve the best for themselves or others in the business. They require everyone else to agree to spay/neuter the cat before turning over the papers.

You should not breed your cats. There are already too many homeless pets out there. It is stupid to breed a cat just because you think it would be cool. Do you have money to pay for shots and vet care for the kittens. What about the food you will need to feed all those little cats. Also, you should not breed a cat that is 10-12 years old. that is just cruel.

10-12 is a bit old to start breeding. and if you have a male and female and they haven't had a litter yet, your female is probably sterile. If she is a calico (brown, black, white, orange mixed patches) this is almost certian. By tabby do you mean he has stripes? I would advise against breeding untill you get some good books and do a little research. It will save you and your cats from a bad situation.

your going to breed moggies with a 10 to 12 year old Queen.

I hate to upset the apple cart but your female is way past breeding age ..
Actually if she hasn't been spayed .. I am surprised that she has gotten to that age WITHOUT having a litter..

as for does it cost .. of course it does.. there's th extra Food you will eed when the female is pregnant .. double that when she starts lactating and feeding kittens .. then there is vet bills should something go wrong .. extra cat litter.. kitten food.. sleepless nights.. 24 hour worrying.. and lots of Grey hairs..

breeding cats is rewarding but it isn't cost effective and at 10-12 years old have a litter in her twilight years could kill your cat..

You don't breed cats unless they're some special breed. The animal shelters & classified are full of kittens who need homes. You should spay & neuter your cats and stop the overpopulation of unwanted animals. Besides, if you aren't breeding a special breed, then you can't really get any money out of them anyway so it's pointless.

Did you drink a cup of crazy for breakfast? This can't be a serious question. There are so many kitties in need of homes and you would only contribute to the need to find homes for 4-8 new little lives, in turn taking away homes from other accidental kittens.

Your cat would be a minimum of 58 years old in human years according to the link below. I don't see think many 58 year old women want to have babies.

Think about your cat and not yourself.

Do us all a favor and don't add anymore unneeded cats to this world, it's overpopulated enough as it is. There's plenty of stray mixed-breeds to bring us kittens. Do some real research with BOOKS and make an educated decision on whether or not you're responsible enough to breed your pets. Anyone can breed their animals on a whim but it takes someone with brains to do it responsibly and for a GOOD reason.

Why on earth would you want a 10 or 12 year old female cat to have kittens? this would be very hard on her physically... she isn't of healthy breeding age.

Breeding her would be like asking your grandmother to have triplets!

Find another, younger mother cat.. better yet, if you want some kittens around, then go to the shelter. There are millions of homeless cats out there...
