my husband leaves for the marines boot camp on Nov. 5th. the recruiter said that my husband can get an allotment sent to me each month for his car payment and insurance. but kevin (my husband) says it goes into his account that he currently has at the bank he's always banked with. so since i have one of his cards i can just take out whatever i need and he shouldnt bother getting an allotment set up, right? i just want to know for sure if this is all correct, and that it will for sure go into his current account?

I've had too many allotments go bad on the first try to chance it while he's in boot camp and not easily available to fix it. That said if he sets up direct deposit to an account you already have access to then you shouldn't have any problems. Just make sure that you really have access to the account other than just a money card. If the machine malfunctions and eats the card what are you going to do then?

Other than it really can take a while for the paperwork for that first paycheck to process just like starting any job. His best bet may be to add your name to the accounts for the bank, the car and the insurance as an authorized person to talk to just in case the paycheck isn't in on time. Or get you a power of attorney to do it.

If you want to, you can set up an allotment directly from his military pay to the car and insurance after he hits a duty station. Even better might be to set up an automatic payment right from the bank as there are a limited number of allotments allowed.

True, you can go into his account, withdraw the money, and pay the bill but an allotment is ALWAYS a better idea. The allotment will pay these companies directly, so you don't ever have to worry about if they're getting paid, being late, etc. Plus, if he gets paid twice a month, the payment will be split so it wont' all come out of one paycheck, which makes it easier for a lot of people.

We have both of our car payment and our mortgage on allotments. It makes things SO much easier.

If you have an allotment set up it comes out before the money hits the bank. It usually take a few weeks for the allotments to take effect. You have to have them in before a certain date.
It might take a few weeks for his first paycheck to go in as well. But if he has no allotments set then it will all go in his account that he picked and you can take it out to pay billls.

he can choose to do either. If he sets up an allotment, though, it will be a one time thing and neither of you would have to worry about missing payment.

As long as he brings all the bank information(routing number and account number) he shouldn't have too much problem being able to set up his Direct Deposit to his existing account. And as long as you have fulla ccess to thta money then it's not an issue.

HOWEVER.. he will NOT BE PAID before the end of Boot Camp!! It takes 6-8 weeks before his first pay will hit, so make sure you let your creditors know ahead of time and make arrangements to either skip a payment or forgive any penalties.

He can set an allotment up to have the money AUTOMATICALLY payed to the bank and car insurance. Or it can be sent to your account.

All he needs to do is, access MYPAY and set up an allotment. he will need the routing number of where the money will go. Each month half will come out of his midmonth, and end of month pay and pay to the account designated on the 1st of the month.

He can get direct deposit to any bank, but it usually won't take effect on the first paycheck. It takes @ 2 weeks to process.

yeah, one thing i've learned- don't change financial details on the military. it never fails- paperwork gets "lost." i would just stick to the normal bank situation.
