Clearly, few realise that MEN actually carry the virus too so, your question is valid and interesting. Lack of money from the NHS I assume.

A good question, a shame so many people are rather ignorant including a RN which is slightly worrying!

Cervical cancer is caused by the human papilloma virus which is sexually transmitted - for those who are unsure that means, having sex!

Girls get vaccinated against cervical cancer, which starts as HPV (irregular cells in the cervix). Boys do not have cervixes. But I think you bring up a valid point that boys should be vaccinated as well, because they do carry the HPV virus, and often times they don't realize it. Great question... and boo on those people who didn't understand the meaning of the question.

Emmy is the closest to being correct. The vaccine was originally only tested in females ages 9-26, so it is only FDA approved for that group so far. Cervical cancer (which only affects women who contract certain high risk strains of human papilloma virus) is the most common repurcussion of HPV (not counting genital warts), but it can rarely cause vaginal cancer, throat cancer, and yes, penile cancer! Hopefully with further studies we'll find out whether vaccinating men will help reduce transmission of the virus.

Cancers are named by the part of the body where it first appears. Men have a cervix which means neck, but cervical cancer is in reference to the cervix of the uterus that men don't have. So, we don't need the vaccine.

Though both sexes can carry HPV, it only results in cancer in females, and new infection rates are highest in women 14 to 26, so that's where they started when they made the vaccine. Now, they're testing it for effectiveness in women over 26, and I imagine men will be next. It takes time to get a new vaccine approved, and it's more efficient to do it for specific demographics, just like they are.

I have just read a report on this whilst sitting in the dentists waiting room.
It said that women catch it from men, so why not vaccinate men.
The answer was given as . Men do not suffer from cervical cancer so it would be unethical to vaccinate them.
It is sexually transmitted, you only get it from men, men have it, but they must get it from somewhere.
Surely if men and women both have it they should both be vaccinated.

lmao same as only woman need smear tests Elric it's a woman's cancer. bless you!!!

Edit I've been thinking about this and do you mean why girls and not the maturer ladies amongst us, I asked the nurse the last time I had a smear and she said I wouldn't see it come in effect in my lifetime but that my daughter would have the benefit of it I think it's because like many have said that men pass a virus on to us so if they vaccinate them young enough then it should work so eventually all women won't need to have a smear.

Actually men should be vaccinated also, as THEY are the carriers of the virus that causes cervical cancer!!!

This should not be in this section.
In fact if they came up with a vaccine to prevent testicular cancer that would be a good thing too and any other cancers come to that.

Elric, why would a man want to worry about getting cervical cancer? your question makes no sense.
