Pierce a hole in the blunt end of the egg and lower into boiling water. For soft boiled, it depends on altitude. 4 1/2 minutes is OK at sea level, but I live at 500 metre (ca.1500 ft) and find 5 minutes is just about right. To test if an egg is soft boiled (white solid but yolk still runny) take the egg out of the water with a spoon and hold it away from the steam. Count 10 seconds. If the eggshell is dry after 10 seconds then it's cooked. If not pop it back in the boiling water for a few extra seconds. If it dries under 10 seconds - better luck next time.

To make perfect boiled eggs, and not have the yellow start to turn dark(caused by over cooking) is:
put the eggs in a pot cover with cold water, bring to boil, boil for exactly 3 minutes, remove from heat let stand and cool on their own till room temp. then poor out water shake the pan around with eggs inside to break up the shells a little , add cold water, should be perfect and peel easily.

Place eggs in a small pan. Cover with at least 2.5cm (1") of cold water, add a pinch of salt and place the pan on a high heat. When the water is almost boiling, gently stir the eggs and set a kitchen timer for one of the timings below:

3 minutes for really soft boiled yolk and set white
4 minutes for slightly set yolk and set white
5 minutes for firmer yolk and white
6 minutes for hard boiled with slightly soft yolk
7 minutes for firmly hard boiled
Reduce heat slightly to keep water bubbling but not fast boiling and stir the eggs once more. Once cooking time is complete, remove the eggs from the pan with a slotted spoon, place into egg cups and serve immediately

A hard boiled egg normally takes about 15 minutes.
A perfect soft boiled egg takes 8 minutes!

Try it, it works!

actually, the best way I find to get a perfect boiled egg is actually to hardly boil it. I boil it for about 2 or 3 minutes, then I turn the heat off and cover it tightly with a lid for about 10 minutes. Gives me perfect eggs.

Forget time scales and gimmicks!!

To boil the perfect egg (I assume you don't want hard boiled!). Cook as follows and this works for all sizes...

Eggs must be put in a small pan of cold water

Bring to the boil

Once water begins to bubble, put some bread in a toaster.

Once toaster is done, cut into soldiers

Now remove eggs from pan and slice...they should be perfect.

(The timing for making average toast is equivalent to 3.5 mins , the same time as it takes to boil an egg, and prep your toast. I have used this method for years and only speed up and slow down prep time for cutting toast depending on size of the eggs. My aggs have always been perfect.

28 min Prep

Place eggs in stainless steel pot, do not stack.
Cover with cold water to where eggs are just immersed.
Cook to boiling, immediately remove and cover with lid; let stand 20 minutes.
Voila, the perfect boiled egg.
Note: You can do this with however many eggs you need;

I, too, in many situations have that comparable situation of the golf green or undercooked yolk. the secret's water temp. vs egg temp. in case you fill a pot of chilly water and place chilly eggs interior the pot after which carry it to boil, as quickly because it boils turn off the warmth, positioned on the lid and allow sit down for 10-12 minutes. in case you start up out with heat water, make useful the eggs are room temp. and as quickly as the boiling action happens, turn off the warmth and canopy for 6-8 minutes. the two way, after the appropriate time, enable the eggs to sit down back earlier coping with and the centers may be the appropriate yellow coloration you're in seek of.

i bought a brilliant little helper in tesco's ,its shaped like half an egg and is red .you put it into a pan of cold water with your eggs and it has a scale on it that darkens as the water boiled ,when the dark ring reaches soft, med or hard on the red egg that is what stage your real eggs are at. it costs about £5 but you get brilliant results with it.its never let me down and i cater for students and cook 30 eggs at a time and they are always all soft boiled
