I am soooooo mad. I asked a question about 2 days ago in regards to whether my kittens could get anything from the vet while staying there overnight after being neutered.

Come today, I saw (when I was examining his surgery site) a white boogerish looking thing that I took off and put it on a paper towel. To my suprise that thing started to move. I also took notice that my kittens are also scratching themselves more than usual, and there are little white specs on their furs. I called the vet and sure enough the lady says its probably tape worms and possibly something else. She told me I have to bring my kittens in. After I got off the phone, I lifted his tail and yet again there was a brownish liquidy discharge. I wiped it off and put it in a baggy to bring in with me. I have an appointment in 2 hours, but I still want to ask you guys:

Sorry I ran out of space.

I have an appointment in 2 hours, but I still want to ask you guys 1) how serious is tape worms, 2) could my other kitten get it/or would he have it already, and 3) I don't feel it's fair that I have to pay for their examination fees because they were perfectly fine before they went to the Vet.
Am I overreacting?

Would I also get fleas? Do I have to fumigate everything I own to get rid of possible fleas?

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOO Mad.

BY THE WAY....3-4 days before the surgery, I brought my kitties in for their checkups where the doctor looked for fleas and tapeworms, and there were none.

I agree that it is not fair for you to have to pay the examination fees if the kitten got sick at their office but they might say that the kitten already had worms or got them else where. Maybe they will work out a deal with you. Yes your other animals can get tape worms now so you should look into them getting treated as well. You can buy the same meds that the vet gives you online, it is much cheaper and if you have to treat multiple animals it is worth it.

There is NO way that your cat got fleas and tapeworms from the vets two days ago!!!!!
The lifecycle of the tapeworm makes that impossible!!!!!!
And if they have tapeworms, they have had fleas already!!

Go to the vet, get it taken care of, and move on!! Chances are HIGH that you have fleas in your house!!! Get Advantage or Frontline from the vet and treat ALL animals in the house at once!!!!!!!!!!

Brownish discharge is probably just from the anal glands...no concern.

You cannot see the tapeworms UNTIL they come out of the anus. Even with a fecal sample, you cannot always see the eggs. So, you wait until you see them and then treat. The cat has to ingest the flea, then the tapeworm has to hatch and attach to the intestine and grow to a point at which it gives off the segments. This does not happen over two days. The cat HAD tapeworm before the neuter.
They get the tapes from fleas, so at some point, the cat had fleas.
MAYBE you can make a case for them getting fleas from the vet, but not the tapes....and since they get tapes from fleas, it will be hard to prove!!!!!!
And just looking for fleas during an office visit, even if you comb the cat, doesnot guarantee that there are no fleas. They are small, and the cat has a lot of fur for them to hide in!!

tapeworms are from fleas, it is highly unlikely that your cats got fleas from staying at the vet for one night. During the exam it is possible that the tapeworm segments were not visible nor were the fleas. there is really no need to be this upset about it. they may not charge you an exam but will charge you for what ever meds are needed. None of this is their fault

your kittens probably got tapeworms from fleas.

and your vet? he should have noticed the problem last visit.. tape worms don't develop overnight, and if there are pieces of tapeworm all over the kittens, they have had them for a long time.

yes tapeworms can suck the life out of a kitten or cat. parasites take vital nutrients from the animal's body.

you can find more information on tapeworms if you do a yahoo search. i'm sure you will find thorough articles. take care.
