My Belgian Malinois (Mal-in-wah) has really dry skin down her back and near her tail. She keeps itching and chewing at it and I don't want her to get a "hot-spot"! I make sure I rinse all the soap out when I give her baths due to her sensitive skin. I have changed her dog food to Innova, which is supposed to be really holistic and healthy for your dog's skin and coat. I was also recommended to put an oil in her food once a day to help. So I think my next step is to change her shampoo. Does anyone have any ideas on a really good moisturizing shampoo for dogs?

How often are you bathing her? Overbathing can lead to dry itchy skin. Dogs shouldn't be bathed more than every couple of months unless obviously dirty, or recommended by a vet for a medical skin issue. Daily brushing will keep your dog clean in between baths.

My own bel mal is getting her third bath today in the year I've owned her. She wouldn't be getting one today if she wasn't showing this weekend.

I'd try an oatmeal shampoo, or one of the many professional grooming shampooes. Speak to a groomer about which one is best for your dog's sensitive skin. They may seem spendy to buy, but remember they are concentrated, so that one gallon you buy, is going to go a really long way.

Sure The people who indicate a "Ph" problem don't know what they are talking about. All soaps are "basic" and none have a Ph so off that they would cause a problem. We do show dogs and I'll tell you we'll wash them with a variety of human shampoos. Pantene is a favorite, the purple shampoos for gray/white hair are often used on white parts of dogs, baby shampoo for puppies, all are just fine! Remember, if it didn't make our dogs look great, we wouldn't use them. We also use human conditioners, human hair sprays, and human mousse on the dogs. They look great. Don't feel bad, for a long time I thought that it was wrong to use human products on dogs. Then I realized that the "grand finale" hairspray I paid $12 a can for at dog shows -- that was in Sally's Beauty Supply (human hair stylist store) for $3. YIKES. A little more talking and you find out that everybody thinks the human products are superior to the dog ones and uses the human products on their show dogs!

Dont waste you money on doggy shampoos.
Use Johnsons Baby shampoos, they are extremely gentle and kind to the fur, as wll as smelling nice. If its gentle and ok for kids its ok for Dogs.

My labrador had really dry and flaky skin when we got her so we put an oil capsule in her food daily and it keeps her coat looking lovely and she has no problems with dry skin now.

As someone said overbathing could be the problem. when you do wash your pet use something that is really mild like a baby shampoo or something.

I only bath my dogs once a year and they have very long coats, grooming is your answer. Daily grooming will keep the coat healthy and shiny as well as knot free, it will also get rid of any dirt.

I would suggest either an oatmeal based shampoo, or woolite.
