Luckily enough I managed to grab him and the little thing got away unharmed. I know they are pests but all my cat does is play with them till they die, whereas if he catches a bird he will eat it. I know it's nature and you can't stop cats from doing it, but how do you deal with it?

He was fed shortly before he went out and has loads of toys (one of his favourites is a coat hanger under the duvet). I know he's bringing me pressies and it's cat nature - I just wish he would kill them :-)

Well, first of all, yeah, it is pretty much nature. My cat did the same thing. I heard noise and she was in stalk mode for 2 straight days. Turned out she had brought it into my bedroom and lost it. :) She caught it though but didn't eat (cause she brought it to me) 1. Is your cat simply hungry. Least likely but still make sure he has ample food. 2. Is he bored? You might want to get some toys to play with him. There are tons of options, stuffed mice, catnip filled toys, feathered doodads. 3. Get rid of the rodents. Obvious, but heah, it would solve the problem.
Lastly, just deal with it. The dead animals are like presents and hey, once you get it, appreciate it and then throw it away. Sad for the animal but part of life. And DONT get a bell collar. Seriously, a cat has to be able to hunt, it's their nature, and stopping it is mean. (at least for the cat.)

I have the same problem more with birds than mice, though i have had a few i do the same rescue them if i can but dont chastise the cat as this is nature it is there hunting instinct in them they bring it back to the house as a gift for you and they are realy pleased with them selves because they think they have pleased you just like cats in the wild do.one of mine bought a hamster back once must of escaped from someware thankfully it was still alive and i was able to find a home for it.

are kitten caught 4 birds in one week so we got him a collar with aloud bell he hasn't had any birds since just the occassional mouse. Domestic cats are a huge threat to small birds and mammals i now think all cat should have to have bells. If it does catch something don't tell it off reward it with attention or treats otherwise it thinks its not doing good enough and will go and get more.

Good for your cat, I hope you gave it a big cuddle - it's trying to teach you how to hunt you know. Mice and rats are a big problem in urban areas and if you cat catches then then that's great. If they don't eat it all, just pick it up with a plastic bag and throw it in the bin. My cats are always bringing worms, slugs and little mice in and then getting very confused when I don't eat them but throw them out. Doesn't bother me, I think it's sweet that they bring me presents, shows they love me.

Aww. That is so cute. Do you by chance have a toy mouse for him? One of my cats love it with the catnip (other pays it no mind) rubbed on it.

It might be best for the toy as you don't know what disease the real one will have.

Yes, my cat, Pumpkin, eats the birds and torments the mice to death and then leaves them untouched - urrgh, AWFUL! Suppose you could get a bell to put around the cats neck.

Like you, I always try to 'saving the private mouse' (or bird). And if it's too late, I put the dead victims into a tighted recycle bin. Sometimes, I have to give my cats some quick teeth-cleaning.

You have now tumbled that cats are hunters.
They only tolerate you because you are a source of food. Mice are fun to play with, until they die.

It's in a cat's nature to hunt... they are hard-wired for this, and it doesn't matter if they are hungry or not.

You deal with it by realizing that nature works this way, hon.

take care!
