Can I use air gun legally to shoot squirrels in my yard? I don't eat them, but they kill all my flowers and make my garden mess. I am living in Louisiana.

My county animal control office will loan you squirrel traps. See if your parish offers the same.
Trap them, bring them out to the woods or swamp, let them go and THEN hunt them.
Shooting them back at the Ponderosa will get you into trouble likely, if you live in town.

(Being Louisiana boy myself, I see we have a few represented here as well. Down on the bayou, it's a crime to NOT kill and eat a wild animal when you come across one.....)

I'm an avid Hunter but around my home I am literally in Squirrel Central and it got to the point I had to do something. I went out and invested in 2 Havahart Squirrel cage traps, rigged them with some peanut butter and peanuts in the shell, and started to catch them "live"..I simply loaded them into my SUV and drove them about 3 miles from my home and "relocated" them.....The traps work great. I've already moved about 22 Squirrels to date, and my bird feeders and flower bulbs are once again safe.....I think if you try shooting them, you'll really pi** off your neighbors, and this way you get it done without being a bad guy...I had a few that were a real "Challenge" to catch and that made it even more interesting. Besides if you were to shoot 1 then there will be 2 more to take it's place soon thereafter..Worked for me!

i'm a louisiana boy myself as well as an avid squirrel hunter.
My property consists of around 90 pecan trees so I know about them being a pest. I'm a firm believer in not wasting game so if you have no intentions of eating them then try and relocate them so today's youth can enjoy their huntin experiences like many of us has in the past. Oh and to clarify for you about using wrong calibers. You can harvest just about any animal with any caliber if you know where to place the shot. Good Luck with the tree rats.

I personally don't have a problem using a BB gun on them but I think you are fighting a loosing battle in any case. They are like cockroaches, they never disappear or give up. If you live in suburbia there are probably a bunch of people that are feeding the damn things which keeps them around and breeding because they are just so darn cute (I hate them, to me they are just rats with a big tail!!) . Your best best is probably JDs suggestion of live trapping and relocating them. My beagle keeps my yard safe from marauding squirrels but her barking pisses off the neighbors, sigh.... If you have a fence that they are using as a highway, you might try running a electric fence along their pathways.

When I lived outside of New Orleans I used to get a cooler of beer and my .375 magnum (brown bear rifle) and sit on my second floor deck and shoot the nutria as they came out of the canal and into my yard. What a blast. They pretty much exploded so there was little mess.

I'd use a .22 rifle. Make a silencer using a 1 liter pop bottle and blast away.

Fox urine works really well to keep them away. It can be purchased at many garden stores.
Call a local exterminator to see if it's legal to shoot them.
I have had to shoot some myself.

I agree with what JD said. People around you might frown upon you killing them. The best solution is ti relocate them elsewhere.

Instead of killing them with an air-rifle, scare them off with a paintball gun. Loud noise, stings them a little, and they will run as far as they can. Plus it's legal all year round.

P.S.- Also works great for deer.

Forget about it.* Bad ill conceived idea.* You do not have the proper firearm # 1.*
