Hi, both of my parents are retired and living on fixed incomes. Their not rich but their far from broke. I recently received a $300 dollar gift voucher from work that can be used at 3 specific stores. I can't decide on whether to purchase a PS3 using the voucher or if I should take both of my parents shopping for items they might want instead - what would you do?

If your parents are like mine, they probably have all the material things that they need. They'd probably rather spend time with you or enjoy a nice weekend out of the house and away from their usual routine.

Anthony this is very mature and thoughtful of you to even consider using your voucher to take out your parents. Obviously they have done much for you throughout your life and you must already be aware of that. It would be very kind of you to take your parents out for a nice meal. Perhaps you could go and get a second hand PS3 from a hock shop or something with remaining monies. There are usually lots of bargains to be gained by buying second hand and they are usually in excellent condition also and sometimes the warranty is still valid too. Regardless what you decide it is very nice of you to even consider doing this for your folks as many others would not have done so and just gone and spent the money on themselves without even considering doing something in return for their folks.

You can give them a small gift and then use the rest on yourself. I think that PS3 are way more expensive then 300 dollars, but anyway, buy yourself something you might like. Like clothes or a night out with the guys or your wife/girlfriend. I always believe that when you give you shall receive. So bless your parents, so you can then be blessed.

Then call them up and tell them to get ready cus you have a surprise for them and take them shopping. I love giving b/c it makes me feel good. This is in no way amoral decision this is your way of thanking them for everything they have done for you. Hey you never know they may have been eying something up they really want but can't afford it and you'll be the one to get it 4 them. You know how big of a smile your parents will have when you just spend time with them, it won't even be about the money.......Have fun cus if your asking you already know what your going to do. the PS3 isn't going anywhere but your parents are......your a good son.

It is very thoughtful and generous of you to think of your parents while trying to decide how to use your gift voucher. It is a very noble gesture, which I imagine will warm their hearts, but am almost positive they will probably decline.

Make your offer to your parents, if they accept, help them purchase the items they need. If they decline, go ahead and get the game. Be prepared to add more to the final purchase price, though!

get something for yourself and treat your parents to something as well. They spent a lot of time, effort and money raising you and if you thought of them when you got the voucher- you are already telling yourself they need a treat. Besides- $300- 3 people.....a three way split is still pretty darn good. Mom/dad can treat themselves individually or as a couple and you still get to enjoy a nice $100 chunk yourself. (maybe setting it aside for the PS3?)

I think that you should ask your parents if they need anything and if they say yes then help them. I am sure there have been many things that they would have liked to buy but they took care of your needs first. Chances are they will not need anything and then you can buy your PS3.

I would take my parents out to get them things that they "NEED" not "WANT". And limited them to about $100 each. So there is still $100 left over for you. That way you did a good deed and you still have $ left over.

Good LUCK!!!

If my parents needed it i would give it to them. Or possibly use it as a Christmas present; otherwise I don't see anything wrong with using it for yourself

come on now... you owe your folks thousands of dollars for everything they have done. Take them to a nice restaurant or have them pick out items they might like.
