Ok, I worked for a vet... and I can tell you a few things. 1. The cat will only be as clean as its owners... so if the house is a mess they are more liable to pee everywhere. 2. If the house is clean and the cat used to use the box... did you change the litter brand? Or do you scoop/change it daily? 3. If the house is clean, you did not change the brand of litter and you are keeping the box clean and the cat used the litter in the past and this is a new behavior he may have an infection and should be taken to the vet.
Cats are very clean animals so they like to make sure that everything around them is clean too... if this is a new behavior in your cat, chances are there may be a bladder infection or something. Take notice if your kitty is eating and drinking normaly and if your kitty is acting normal. If you notice anything odd in thoes behaviors take your kitty to the vet right away. You could add a second box to your home if you would like... its possible that your kitty does not like to enter the box if he/she was recently in there and you have not scooped right away. Another box will give your kitty a second choice of places to go. If you find that your kitty is constantly going in the same spot on your carpet... put a second box on that spot and then you can slowly move it later. If the second box does not help... then you really should go to your vet. Good luck hun.

No. As long as the litterbox is accessible, clean, and in a private area cats usually go there instinctively. Going outside the litterbox is usually a behavioral problem or indicates a health issue such as with the urinary tract. I have 6 kitties and the only time we have any accidents is if one certain one gets shut in the bedroom when we go to work he'll pee on something so we have to make sure we locate him before leaving. I've never really had to "train" a cat to use it. I show them where it is and they just know where to go.

The cat shouldn't have accidents. If it's an older cat it could be sign of kidney trouble.
Sometimes younger cats will develop kidney and bladder problems due the "ash" in their dry cat food. I believe ash is a euphemism for mineralized crud, regardless cheaper dry cat foods will cause problems with some cats.

Not normally. Typically a littler box trained cat will only do this if the litter box is too dirty or if they are upset about something (like a new cat that is sharing the litterbox, etc)

So far we haven't had any accidents with our kitty. We've had her for two weeks and she was litter trained since day one.
Litter trained cats rarely have accidents. Unless they have to go, and their litter box is out of reach

If it's litter trained it shouldn't unless the litter box is n't cleaned out. or if the cat is sick and couldn't make it to the litter box in time. But generally if the box is cleaned and the cat is trained you shouldn't have any trouble with it.

No they don't.. In fact, knock on wood, I've never had an accident with my babies.... They are very good litter box users. Well I guess I can't say never, when Solo, my youngest was sick, really sick, he went to get into his box and when he went to lift he back legs, he just couldn't control himself.. but he was never punished for it and has never done anything like that again...

Never with litterbox needs. But if he's going to have a hairball he runs to the nearest carpet.
