I buy the bricks of caramel at a store we have in Portland called Cash and Carry, the brand of the caramel is Peter's. It's a box similar to the large Velveeta cheese boxes. You might want to google and see if there's a store near you. I then add a small container of whipped marshmellow to the box. It's wonderful and makes excellent caramel apples. Also, most grocery stores will give you the craft sticks for free. At least I was able to get them. They come with the bulk caramels they sell. We microwave the caramel and then mix in the creamed marshmellow and then dip the apples. It's really yummy.

You can find them just about anywhere or you can make the caramel yourself or just buy the affy tapples. To mmake the caramel yourself you need a few cups of sugar and a little bit more water and put them in a pot together and then boil them until it gets thick and has a caramel color to it and don't stir it too much you will also need a candy thermometer if you can get one. It needs to be about 170°C/340°F to actually turn to caramel but you can be one degree under because the heat will rise a little. But if you also want to put the little candies on you can either buy those or make them from the other batch and add vanilla butter water, and milk as well and make sure they don't harden too much. Or you could buy the little caramel candies and melt them in some low water and then they are pretty much just caramel now and they have to be kept at some hot or warm temperature.

They sell it at any supermarket or grocery store. You can either get the little caramels and unwrap all the pieces, or you can now usually find tubs full of caramel that you can melt in the microwave and dip apples in. I have also seen flat caramel circles that you wrap over the apples and place in the microwave to melt. All of these types of caramel come with the wooden sticks for the apples.
You may also want to buy some nuts or sprinkles to put on the apples before the caramel cools.

Your local grocery store (we have Shaw's and Stop and Shop around here) should have the caramels available. My store has them in 2 places - right next to where they sell the apples and over in the aisle with flour and sugar, etc. The caramels are typically on same shelf as chocolate chips, etc.

In most stores-especially this time of year-the caramel is near the apple section. If not, purchase the "square" looking caramels, Brachs are good.

Candy aisle, Kraft Caramels in the little cubes.
Or you can get sheets of caramel in the produce aisle in a packet, usually displayed near the apples. It contains sheets of caramel that you wrap over the apples, sticks, etc.

I wouldn't buy that caramel they sell in the produce section, I tried that once and it's terrible. Buy the little caramel cubes as one of the answers above suggest.
