I live in Kansas, I work, have a child, and a spouse that does not work.

Doesn't matter what state you live in for Federal tax.
Wife = 1
Child = 1
You can claim yourself

Three - yourself, your spouse, and your child. This is different than allowances on the W-4, which is usually the same or more than the number of exemptions.

On your actual tax return you'll have 3 exemptions, one for each person.

You could safely take two more on your W-4 without taking a chance on owing, and probably would still get a refund.

You get 2 personal exemptions and 1 dependent deduction.
