If you mean in the literal sense of have their been atheists in foxholes, in combat, or on the front lines the answer is most definetly yes. Two near and dear to me in fact. Some by this expression mean that when facing a difficult situation atheists will turn to God or religion. I think this is not the case although some might. One of those two near to me almost died, still an atheist and maintains his thoughts were on what the most pragmatic way for himself and those with him to survive was rather than on God.

I fought in the front-line infantry all the way across Europe , until we met the Russians coming the other way in Czechoslovakia . It was mud , blood , and killing every inch of the way . Many many nights were spent in fox holes and slit trenches with muddy water so deep that I had to prop my head up on my helmet to keep from drowning . German artillery shells would be like rainfall . Life wasn't worth two cents with all of the dieing and killing . Never once did I ever look to "god" for help . I didn't believe in the supernatural then , I don't believe in it now .
There are many Atheists who went through the very worst and longest part of the war , and came out with no belief in any "gods " .

Of course there are. I served in the military. There are atheists serving in Iraq as we speak. Every month in American Atheists magazine they profile an "atheist in a foxhole", an atheist how has served or is serving in the military.

The whole "no atheists in foxholes" quote is just more bullshit pushed by believers. They have to denigrate people who disagree any way they can, even by lying.

Yes, I am sure there are. We all come to know God at different times. God usues this to draw the people to Him, but not are all saved in the foxhole.

The atheists are not cowardly enough to hide in a foxhole, nor are they stupid enough to get into a situation where a foxhole is their only refuge.

So I say no, there are no atheists in foxholes. They are quite capable of avoiding that situation entirely.

It is either be an Atheist or assume God is trying to kill you. If you take the Atheist position, you are more likely to be able to react to danger.
