Do you feel like political correctness has gotten to a slightly absurd point (example - Halle Berry freaking out about joking that the edited photo with her having a big nose looks like her Jewish cousin or J.K. Rowling declaring that Dumbledore is gay out of nowhere) or do you feel like it is entirely appropriate and necessary in today's society?

melouofs - Someone had mentioned in a question elsewhere something about J.K. Rowling making the comment about Dumbledore being gay in order to appease a wider crowd and that having a "token" gay character in literature and movies now is considered politically correct, implying that you can't leave any minority out or you might offend them.

Being political correct is the thing these days.
But JKR's announcement was irrelevant and quite unnecessary.
The story was about Harry Potter, not Dumbledore. So what was the point?
If she really wanted to be so political correct, she would have made Dumbledore gay throughout the books. But she ain't that stupid because she knew her books never would have sold as well.
Hmmmm. Let's see now? A gay headmaster over innocent boys and girls in a school that's far, far away from their parents?
The HP series would have been over at Book 1.

When I read about Halle Barry apologizing for her comment, I wanted to find her and personally slap her across the face. If people can't accept the fact that she was just joking, they need to loosen up.
I think a little PC-ness and sensitivity is necessary (mentally handicapped rather than mentally retarded sounds so much better to me), but not to the point it's being taken these days. People just want some kind of excuse to sue someone because they were "offended" and to make money. It's sad.

PC is BS! Also, no one ever thought to draw a line in the sand to stem just how far people could take things. Now we have an out of control world and people that overly, nosy, sensitive, offended, tattletales, etc. God help us all and maybe one day COMMON SENSE will rule the roost again!

Too me it's always like ..."BIG DEAL!" I mean people seem to be hypersensitive these days, and it truly only ends up taking away from the real important issues. What happen to having a sense of humour or simply being able to laugh at ourselves? Of course, their are real hurtful things that are said from time to time, but I think we really have to pick our battles carefully, as to not give the over all impression that perhaps it's better to keep your mouth closed, for fear of retaliation....it's about free speech in the end, and I don't think anyone wants this taken away from us!

Whilst I do not condone prejudice of any sort, the PC brigade and the thought police are debasing this country by dumbing down everything. Why cannot the government and everyone in authority treat us like adults instead of infanticising us? No wonder we are sliding towards being Third World.

Political correctness has 2 purposes.
1. Cater to those who are quick to anger, slow to forgive and easily provoked.
2. Push political agendas.

'Political Correctness' is necessary in our world. It is a term used to describe language, ideas, policies, or behaviour seen as seeking to minimize offence to racial, cultural, or other identity groups.
Conversely, the term 'politically incorrect' is used to refer to language or ideas that may cause offense or that are unconstrained by orthodoxy.
Nobody has a reason to use 'Political Correctness' in a pejorative sense if he doesn't intend to offense somebody in a political incorrect manner.

Yes, I think hte PC thing is absurd. I don't think your JK Rowling example has anything to do with being PC, though.
