Just ask them straight out...

"Are you married?"

That's usually the best way to avoid the chance of a lie.

Just pop in a casual question like, "You must be married." or, "Lots of people arn't getting married these days, by the way...are you married?"
Depending on your voice you don't have to make it sound like you like her/him. It's easier than you think.

Approach the situation with an observation, i.e. "Be carefull, your ice cream is dripping down your hand. Its good you left your wedding ring at home today; or did you lose it?"
