There's only really one thing that proves without doubt that 'global warming' is happening, everything else is just indicative.

The one irrefutable fact is that certain gases have the ability to retain heat within Earth's atmopshere. This group of gases are generally referred to as the Greenhouse Gases.

You could take away the melting ice caps, retreating glaciers, desertification and all other factors but the simple physical property possessed by the greenhouse gases would remain.

Just to elaborate a bit: The temperature record, for example, tells us that the world is warming, of that there's no question; but it doesn't tell us why the world is warming or provide the proof of 'global warming'. Some of the things that tell us the world is warming or are indicators of warming include the temperature record, rising sea levels, loss of sea ice, retreating glaciers, increased number of adverse weather events (droughts, floods, stroms etc), changing migratory patterns, desertification, increased precipitation, spread of insects and diseases that thrive in warmer conditions etc.

Define your terms: What do you mean by the term "global warming"?

Climate is a very difficult subject and is best left to people who can at least read the mathmatical equations in purport model.

Temperatures at any point on this planet can vary. The temperature in your back yard is different today then it will be on Jan 23 2008. The temperature in your yard will not be the same as a temperature in Osaka Japan or Busan Korea and it will not be equal to the temperature in Rome IT or Paris FR.

We are in a period of increased solar activity -- so much so the there was a recent report that the temperation on Neptune or one of its moon is 18 degress warmer then the rest of the planet --- Now who caused that?

I suggest that your read about the Gaiai theory of planetary corrections (Spelling may be off on that term.)

Most climate models do NOT factor in water vapour into the equation. Water vapour is the most abundant so called "green house" gas --- but it is not used in the current religious beliefs over this topic:

You as for "proof" of some concept that you did not define.

in response to the answer above. Are you a scientist? 10,000 scientists - do you think they have all done individual research under clinical conditions? Where is the actual proof?
The world is heating up (compared to what? Last year? the last ice age? a decade ago? what ever happened to the cycles the world has been through for millions of years? do these no longer exist?!)

The polar ice caps are melting - because of what reason. Nobody has proved this is a direct result of man made pollution, this is just circumstantial evidence.

Al Gore says so - and then gets disproved on all his major claims by "scientists"

Do you really believe everything you are told? Lots of people believe in a "loving god" who just happens to also approve of people going around blowing things up, some people believe in Scientology, some people believe that the leaders of the world are actually reptiles.

People can think what they like - just because I don't want to believe what is essentially a media hyped, fashion driven mass hysteria, doens't make my opinion any less valid.

In fact concentrations of greenhouse gases are not drivers in the global temperature, at least not CO2. Water vapor is far more important. In fact CO2 appears to rise because of temperature and is an effect rather than a cause. Man-caused global warming is largely a fantasy out of the political left. The earth has been warming for thousands of years and it goes in cycles of warming and cooling. Shorter cycles are caused by variations in output from the sun and its magnetic field. Look at the graph on the bottom of the link and realize the now is to the left and a million years ago to the right. It shows that global warming is not a new phenomena as some on the political left would have you believe.

What's the matter, is the opinion of the majority of scientists in the world not enough for you? If that's the case, I suggest no amount of evidence will change your closed and locked mind.
Just three days ago, ten thousand scientists from around the world warned that the latest evidence suggests that we're in far worse shape than we realized only a few days earlier, and that the survival of the human species is at stake.

Tell us: are you smarter than ten thousand scientists? Show us your academic degrees and show us your own research disproving what all those scientists are saying. C'mon, mister know-it-all, put up or shut up!

Solar activity has increased over the last century, and is directly responsible for at least 50% of the warming since 1900, and at least 35% since 1980.

The Earths albedo declined dramatically since 1985 and probably can more than explain all of the warming over the last twenty years.

From 1980 until 2000 the world experienced an unusually high number of El-Nino's.

Trevor is right scientifically, but as a practical matter I can give you three reasons for the general public, even though they're related.

The scientific data proves it's real.

EVERY major scientific organization agrees it's real.

We're actually starting to see the effects.

No if anyone is telling yo it is science, there lying. It's subjective science. There is no real proof. This is a FACT.
