how would the situation have been different, if at all?

We the American people would not be so divided.

I believe that if Bush & co. and the Main Stream Media had been/would be more upfront (and informed) about that which we face, the American people would better understand what is at stake.

Edit:
LOL - of course we will always have the hopeless brain dead idiots like the one who gave this answer a thumbs down.

The war would have ended a couple of years ago.

The enemy is depending on the media and internal politics in the US to win the war for them.

Hasn't anybody noticed that the bulk of attacks that occur in Iraq are in places where the media is?

Not at all! First, you have to remember that the invasion had the support of most people in the beginning. It was only after months of mismanagement, and the discovery that we'd been manipulated that the populace realized the invasion was a terrible decision from the start. Second, no amount of public support could have changed the fact that the Sunnis and the Shiites have been fighting and killing one another since the 7th Century. Our invasion only served to exacerbate the situation. Finally, the realization that not only did Iraq have nothing to do with 9/11, but also posed no realistic threat to our security has sickened us all when we consider the massive loss of American lives caused by this folly.

Got to go with Pfo and Sharia_vigilant on this one. We would not be so divided as a nation and we need to NOT be divided.

Morale would be up, here and abroad, and our people over there fighting and dying would know we support them wholeheartedly. Their families here would know they have the support of their fellow countrymen when they lose their sons and daughters.

No matter what happens in Iraq, I want my people to know we support them. They are dying over there, for crying out loud. We should do better to them than fight and bicker over here.

Is someone forgetting that this war had wholehearted support from damned near everyone at its beginning ?
At least until it was proven that this thing came on the wings of lies and half-truths !!
My feelings are--- that if it had had a continuing full support of people and political positions -- we would already be in IRAN tearing the hell out of that place as well -- and giving Halliburton a new Trillion dollar "deal" to put it all back together again after the fact !!!

And, to your first responder
Where are these governments that you speak of ?
The ones that are "responsive" to their people ??
Do we know of such a place ? Is it somewhere that we would all know or recognize ?

And, to your second responder
We didn't go into Iraq to "get the people responsible for the 9 / 11 attacks" -- we went in to dismantel the Hussein government -- and rid the region of those Weapons of Mass Destruction that didn't exist !!
It has been proven over and over again that IRAQ had NOTHING to do with any attacks on the USA !!!

The Iraq war had broad public support--until it became clear that the Saddam regime had no WMD andhad no ties to al-Qaida

No people is going to support an endless and clearly mismanaged war that was entered to underfale pretenses. There is no "what if we had supported the war" scenario--the overwhelming opposition to this fiasco was inevitable. Even if (hypothetically) the people of the United States were mindless enough to continue to support a war of aggression such as the Iraq war, it would have made no difference. The results would have been the same. The Bush/Cheney regime have tried to blame the results of their incompe tence on "anti-war" elements--but that is preposterous. They have been given all the funding and resources they asked for.

cvq, your questions never fail to impress me.

Morale would be up across the board, that's a given. That could be a boost to help the soldiers who are struggling the most in this conflict and it might boost the morale of the Iraqi government if they knew America was on board to help them, rather than arguing back home if we're going to stay the course, split them up or run away.

First off, you have to realize that today isn't 1941. Back then my father quit highschool to fight the war. Today, you are lucky to get America to back anything. I think the main problem is that we seem to have short term memory issues when it comes to things that have happened. Most don't realize that we went there to get the group of people that did the attacks... Then you have the group of people who buy into the theory that it was an inside job. So to answer your question, if America was once again America, we would stand behind our troops, and give them all the support they need to thwart the people who wish to and have done us harm.

No I think Bush and Co. were determined to hijack the government in any event. They would have fabricated some other excuse and rammed it through.

9-11 was just what they needed to get started, and I'm sure another incident like 9-11 was inevitable and very likely to weaken the American people's resolve to resist supporting American aggression against the wrong countries.
