I hear that description occasionally, and I was just curious about different interpretations of it...

It refers to the idea that some souls have been around longer than others reincarnating, learning and becoming wiser with each lifetime. An old soul is one who appears to be very wise for their years therefore their soul has been around longer and gained more wisdom and experience than most. Even though that person may not remember actually being reincarnated the wisdom shines through their personality in this lifetime.

I heard he or she is a "good old soul" growing up in the Smokies and the Blue Ridge. The meaning being that they were friendly, easy to talk to and get along with, would help you out if they could and so forth. I do not recall any "religious" connotation, however. Soul, in this context just meant "person" and old meant elderly. There used to be a lot of dialects in America, but radio, moving pictures, and television, have largely obliterated them.

Perhaps not all souls were created at the same time...perhaps new ones are being made even today.

And/or

Certain souls have been through many incarnations (for those who believe reincarnation) and so they are "old" by how many physical incarnations they have had.

A person that has lived many lives. Sometimes it takes more than one life time to get the meaning of life and to learn the lessons.

I don't know if this is a repeat, but I heard an old soul could be someone young, but wise.

someone wise beyond their years...someone who has knowledge that hasn't been taught... a natural in born quality of peace and serenity often... Ever seen in a movie or someone in person - usually a child who is sick with some kind of terminal illness and evenin the midst of their suffering, they are at peace and comforting those around them... that could be one example.

Since the word 'soul' means the person himself, then an old soul is an older person.
