Per "E" request "unless there's more to story.."
Employer is a Contracting Agency - basically a high end temp agency for engineers etc.
The agency is based in California, but has offices in several places including AL.
The contract I am fulfilling is "temporary" in that it has to be renewed every 12 months.
The place I actually work is in Alabama, which is where I've lived all year. I've not set foot in California let alone perform any work there.
My agency bills my work place for my time, then pays me - so the money goes from Alabama to California and back to Alabama... Minus CA Personal Income Tax withheld.

No. You should refer them to the publication linked below, that discusses withholding for out of state (out of CA) employees.

If you live, & work in Alabama, that's what state taxes should be deducted from your paycheck....
I live in one state, and do work in several surrounding states and the District of Columbia, but my earnings taxes are from my HOME state........

No, you should not be paying CA state tax. You should be paying AL state tax.
