I am an 8th grade school teacher and I just put blue streaks in my hair. I can already see the administrators circling. It isn't against our contract and I don't see what effect it has on my ability to teach. What do you guys think and why?

I totally agree with you that there is nothing wrong with teachers expressing their personalities through their appearance. Most of these problems are caused by principals and administrators looking for ways they can exercise their petty powers over people - whether teachers or students. If anyone complains just stand your ground and insist that they should not bring their puerile prejudices to work with them!

Technically, your hair should still grow out the same color. But there are some things that could influence whether it does or not. Like for instance, age- if your at an age where your body is still making changes and whatnot, once your dye fades or your hair grows out, it might seem like its a different color- but it could easily have nothing to do with the dye. Same thing happened when I was younger. I had very fair strawberry blonde hair, and I had dyed it a deep auburn. Now my hair has always grown out as a browner dirty blonde because I had dyed it during a changing period.

Go for it....I would have loved a teacher with blue streaks!! If the administration has a problem with it...I would say that is the least of their problems with all the teachers getting in trouble for having sex with students! Which makes your blue hair not an issue at all!!!

Of course there is nothing wrong with it, people really need to be more open minded and not judge other people because they look different. I hate when people are so judgemental, like you said it dosent take away your ability to teach nor does it make you a bad person to have blue streaks in your hair.

let people look and let people talk your not doing anyone any harm and your doing what makes you happy

you only live once!!

It's fun it's funky, why shouldn't you??? you're a teacher... a person, and you don't only go to school and teach!

I teach swimming, and i change my hair colour frequently... purple, pink, blue, went green and gold for the commonwealth games... orange, whatever. It's not permanent, and it's fun.

Would they complain about wearing a blue hat? lol

You're right, your hair has nothing to do with your teaching abilities. The only problem I would have with it would be, the teachers should have the same rules for hair and dress as the students. So, if there is no rule against students with blue streaks, then I have no problem with teachers with blue streaks. Good luck. 2D

If the students can't have non-natural color based on too distracting for the classroom, I'd think the same thing would apply to you. After all, you KNOW they are all staring at you, so it's even more distracting.

Unless it's a temp thing for Halloween, I'd leave the blue streaks until summer.

Yeah, It's a freedom of speech. If there is nothing binding in your contract about it then be bold, and show off your statement. How can they judge or say anything to you about your fashion statement?

Just because you "can," technically, doesn't mean that you SHOULD. You must be young and inexperienced if you think that by having blue streaks in your hair that it won't affect your ability to teach. Students will be distracted, they will not take you seriously, and your peers and supervisors will think of you as unprofessional and attention-seeking. It might be fun for a party, Halloween, football game, etc., but I'm sure you know that you will not become a more effective teacher by trying to be "buddies" to your students.

Absolutely! And let no one tell you different. Thumbs up to you. I admire you for being? You. Get it? It makes my day to see someone dare be who they are. Breaks the chain of supposed law. I have many friends who do the same. Incredible not only for what they are as a professional but for who they are as a person. Thanks.
