Generally, these are also called boils and they are painful. Apply a good triple antibiotic ointment and cover with a bandaid. The ointment I always recommend is Bacitracin. You can find that at your local pharmacy.

There are two features that identify possible staph infections: (1) bright red skin surrounding the infection; and (2) painful burning/stinging/tingling feeling.

Staph infections on the skin can begin as pimples, red splotches, boils, or redness in scratches or cuts. The use of antibiotic ointments is no longer recommended by some doctors since the antibiotics do not kill resistant staph, and use of the antibiotics is what is causing resist bacteria to develop in the first place. You should clean cuts and open infections with soap and water, followed by hydrogen peroxide, and then apply an antiseptic such as tincture of iodine (povidone-iodine is less effective, but doesn't sting nearly as much).

It could be. You should go to ask.com and click on Images and enter Staph Infection. I did it and there are many pictures that could be helpful. Just make sure you aren't eating or are very sensitive because some of the pictures are a little disturbing. If anything, you should definitely go to the doctor.

You wouldn't be over reacting by going to the doctor and having it checked out. It beats waiting until it gets into your bloostream and starts eating your internal organs.
