i've good reason to believe 1 corinthians 15:5,6 means that the 500, James and all the apostles saw Jesus at the one time at the ascension. its usually taken to mean separate appearances i think as its not been asked before.

I am going to speak to you of My Ascension into Heaven. Forty days after My Resurrection, after having confirmed in the Faith My Apostles and My disciples, after having instituted the Sacrament of Confession and given to the Church a head in the person of Peter, assuring him of My assistance and confiding in him the custody of this Church represented by sheep and lambs - a Figure of Speech I generally use to designate souls, being Myself the Good Shepherd - in the presence of more than five hundred people, I ascended into Heaven.

i don't mean at all to confuse the words of the 500 seeing him at 'one time'. I know this just means the 500. sorry for all the confusion

Most English Bible translations are plain humbug
or in best case just on a quite low kindergarten level,
J.D Hurd Jr wrote a fairly sound analysis about the bg.

5And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:

6After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.

Clearly states that the 500 all saw Him at once, not at separate times. He was seen by Cephas and then the apostles, then the 500 (three separate events and sitings...remember, He came to the Apostles while they were in a locked room and spoke to Thomas and Peter Luke 24)

I think it depends what version you take the verse from; in the NIV Paul seems to indicate that Jesus appeared to the 500 brothers later than Peter and the Twelve (1 Cor. 15: 5-6)

My response to you would be "what difference does it make"? The POINT is that at some point between His resurrection and his ascension, Jesus appeared to 500+ people.

I firmly believe that you need to think about what is the essential issue, not the 'debateable' non-essential ones.

It could be translated either way without changing the essential message: that Jesus appeared to multitudes of people prior to His ascension.

I would say that the sightings were separate. Just read the gospel when Jesus rose from the dead. He went to different places. The 500 saw Him all at once, but it separatley lists the 12, then the apostles.

From bible studies, we're told that after His resurrection, he stayed around for 40 days before ascending. Approximately 500 people saw him during that time.

Get a bible with commentary. If this has been a point of contention, the commentary will mention this. Short of that, learn Greek and read the original.

I wouldn't analyze the Bible too much, unless you have the greek version. Other version are only translations and sometimes misunderstood.

I would just know that a relationship with Jesus is the most important thing the Bible talks about.

Appearances can be DECEIVING: Mt24:24;Mk13:22.
So: Take Heed 101 Class: to AVOID being deceived.
"Believe not": Mt 24:23,26. Rather "Know": John 8:32.
Know truth(grace) makes you free of Believe lies(laws).

That scripture reads:
"he appeared to Ce′phas, THEN to the twelve.  AFTER THAT he appeared to upward of five hundred brothers at one time. AFTER THAT he appeared to James, THEN to all the apostles. BUT LAST OF ALL he appeared also to me..."
The capitalized words indicate a series of appearances and not a class action.
