If you don't have feelings for him anymore, you've broken the promise. He'll understand. He said promises are meant to be broken. I don't know what he did, but if you've lost the love, I'm sure there was a good reason behind it.

Promises are never meant to be broken unless the other person does something to have a reason not to keep that promise. You promise to love someone forever, but you are promising that to the person who is faithful to you and if the person cheats on you with someone else, the promise means nothing. The fact that he promises you will always be in his life and then says that promises were made to be broken gives you reason to break your promise as well. You need to dump this clown and find someone else

No, promises are meant to be kept. Those who say they're meant to be broken make them easily because they know it will influence you and don't feel bound by them.
It's good that you take promises seriously, but you aren't obligated to love him forever because of it. In this case, I'd say you should forgive yourself for making a foolish promise and break up with him. Then use this experience to keep you from making foolish promises again.

Promises shouldn't be made if there's a high chance they will be broken, however that doesn't seem to deter many people.
Don't promise something you cannot deliver (or don't know if you can deliver). It's better to say "I will do my best" or "I hope" than "I promise" and not keep the promise.
I'd never tell someone I'll always be in their life, because I don't know what the future holds. What if they or I do something to ruin the friendship? What if we just drift apart and go our separate ways forever? Better to say "I hope we are always in each other's lives" than to promise it will be so...

You shouldn't make promises that you can't keep. And to say that you will always love someone is a promise that noone is positive that they will be able to keep forever. I don't know what he did to you but it sounds to me that it's already over between the two of you. Break up with him. Don't waste anymore precious time with someone who doesn't deserve you.

I always say I love you, I just don't like what you do. So you are not going to break your promise, you are adjusting the way you think he should be acting.

if there's a time limit, you can tell if it is broken or not. if someone promises you something and there is no time limit, you can't really tell, but likely meant to be broken. but who knows? he might come back to your life after awhile. my two ex's from 8 and 10 years ago came back to talk to me this year.
