I'm watching how many calories and fat I eat and working out 3-4 times a week trying to lose 10 lbs. Would angel food cake be an ok treat for dessert over the weekend?

Yes, very low fat, as long as you add nothing else to it like ice cream, strawberries, etc..

Well that depends on how much you're going to eat. Here's the specs on Angel Food cake:

1/12 of a cake or 12 oz (which usually means one small piece if you cut the cake into 12 pieces) contains 72 calories and 16 grams of carbohydrates.

That's not actually so bad, but if I were you I'd avoid it altogether or make sure you just have ONE piece. Also, if you want cake you should consider trimming back your dinner just a little bit to make up for it.

Ingredients:
1 1/4 cup Cake flour; sifted
1 3/4 cup Sugar
1/2 teaspoon Salt
12 Egg whites; at room temperature
1 1/2 teaspoon Cream of tartar
1 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon Almond extract; optional

Directions:

In bowl sift together flour, 3/4 cup sugar and salt. Re-sift 3 times. Set aside. Beat egg whites until foamy.

Add cream of tartar and continue to beat until soft peaks form. Gradually beat in remaining 1 cup sugar, 2 tablespoons at time, until mixture holds stiff peaks. Fold in vanilla and almond extracts. Add 1/4 flour mixture at time, folding in gently with rubber spatula. Gently spoon batter into ungreased 10-inch angel food cake pan. Cut through center of batter 2 or 3 times with spatula to remove large air bubbles. Bake at 350 degrees 40 to 45 minutes or until top springs back when touched with finger and wood pick inserted near center comes out clean.

Invert pan over bottle or inverted funnel and let stand until thoroughly cool. When cool, loosen sides and center with metal spatula and turn out onto platter.

This is a lower fat version( at least that is what they claim) !!

a better suggestion would be carrot cake. better still if you make your own you can use fresh carrots and fruit sugar (as opposed to refined white sugar - can find fruit sugar in the same aisle) whilst a mixture of ground almonds and apple juice make a truely awesome icing. that way you get your veg., protien(from the almonds) and a cake lower in sugar (better for your waistline)

Sure it is but just like anything else it is about the serving sizes on your foods. Sounds like you are doing everything correct!!
