Having done 15 years in the Navy (8 Enlisted, 7 Commissioned), and then 10 years in the Corporate world, I found that MOST military "bosses" NCO's and Officers have FAR better leadership and management skills than most folks in the "real-world".

As to "Authoritarianism"... in the military, the rules are clear and you have the chance to read the rules before you sign the contract. I found Corporate rules to often be by whim, and frequently undocumented

Military members are taught to follow orders and to do so immediately. There is a good reason for this: When a commanding officer gives a command s/he HAS to know that his/her troops are going to follow that order. Can you imagine how it would be if everybody had to stop and take a vote? There's a time and a place for everything and the military certainly has their time and place and obedience is definitely a requirement. Authoritarian? Certainly. Why else would anybody obey orders?

You cannot fight a battle with a bunch of people saying, "But, I think we should do this or that". One person must be in charge calling the shots, a leader. If you choose to see them as authoritarian then so be it. I saw them as leaders and followed until I became a leader. Good followers make good leaders because they know what it takes to get people to follow.

The military is not a democracy.
"Gee Guys, here comes the enemy, let's take a quick vote ,do we shoot 'em ,run,or surrender ?'

While they send the measure to committee the enemy will stand politely and wait?

I just bet they will.

Sharia's got it right.

There is no "democracy" in the military...there can't be for it to perform it's primary function.

You have to KNOW for a fact that orders will be carried out.
