yes over a 24 hour period a session of resistance training will cause a greater caloric expenditure than a session of cardiovascular exercise of the same duration and intensity.
basically the response from the endocrine system is much greater from resistance training than with cardio. traditional cardio does not cause the same increase in testosterone, growth hormone or insulin growth factor 1 (IFG-1)

That depends on the intensity of weight training. If you lift weights like most people at the gym, most of your time is spent resting or talking to people. In that case, you're not burning as many calories as you could be. Also, if you're just doing light intensity lifting, you won't burn as many calories during or after your workout. So, the potential is there to burn a lot of calories, you just have work for it. But, don't discount cardiovascular exercise. Your body needs that as well.

You can get an idea of calories burned by using a heart rate monitor. Burning any fuel requires oxygen. Your cardiovascular system delivers the oxygen.
Higher heart rate = more oxygen = more calories burned.
Try running for an hour and lifting for an hour, then compare average heart rate for those sessions. Running wins by a mile.
Yes, lifting has some anaerobic content, and yes, long term, more lean muscle mass will raise your BMR slightly, but nowhere close to the direct calorie burning effect of vigorous aerobic exercises like swimming, cycling or running.

LV, it would be interesting to see clinical data supporting that. It seems completely counterintuitive. Don't forget there is a rebuilding effect after a hard run as well.

the real answer is no, but longlasting yes, in cardio your heart is pumping, using more oxygen and using more built up energy which is calories, im weight lift your muscles are working but it isn't moving anything else so your body is still using significantly less calories if say you were running. But it is true when you do built muscle your resting metabolic rate hightens, but don't skip cardio!
