Because they do cause gas in some people and we have for years made up jokes and silly songs/rhymes about this.

the more you eat, the more you TOOT...
one other explaination could be that when we have beans it tends to create a lot of gas in our stomachs as it is being digested... (personally, I like my peom better...)

because the way that people cook them causes fermentation....either UNDERcooking them, or letting them sit for a long time, and fermentation begins....or they add sugar (senseless), and it causes even more fermentation.
