I have a 5 month old Saint and another Saint that is a year and a half. We feed both of them at 8:30 in the morning and at 8:30 at night. The puppy has woken me up early maybe once or twice this week by gagging and maybe puking up a little whitish frothy something. Then she lays back down and sleeps untill I feed her, and has no problem with her food or the rest of the day. She did this this week and also a couple times maybe a month ago. She is on nutro natural controled growth, and our house is pretty much puppy-proofed, though the only reason we let her sleep outside of her crate now is because she is well behaved and doesnt get into anything. What could make her do this? Do I need to take her to the vet?

she is up to date on all her shots. We usually take her and her brother on a short walk after they eat because they always have to poo after they eat at night. We make sure they eat slowly, always monitoring them. they are well trained and wont eat out of eachothers bowls. They get a few treats throughout the day.

It sounds like his belly is getting too empty! My Boxer does this if he gets too hungry, I think it has to do with the acid in their stomachs! Try giving him an additional meal! I hope this helps!!

It always good to ask a vet. How my Vet works. I just call and tell the lady on the phone what happening. She go and talks to him as he usually working. Then she comes back and tells me what to do. Most times is something I can do and no Vet bill. If, he think it needs looked at, she tells me to bring the animal in. We have more than dogs.
Being a puppy it could have an upset stomach. This sound almost like an Acid Reflux. For dogs and cats we always leave dry food out and they just snack when they want. Then we have some regular feeds when we eat of a canned food. We found this works well, as the pets not become gluttons that just swallow down food chunks. They eat slow and chew their food.
You may watch how they eat and be sure the big dog not take away from the puppy. Also, if the puppy eat like it starving it not a good feeding schedule for the puppy. It may be good for the big dog. Puppies are like a people baby. They need to eat more often. You may try feeding the puppy less, but, more times a day. A late night before you sleep be another good time. Normally when I have a puppy, it kept in the house for training. They learn being taught, and taught being around someone to teach. So, at night when I hear the puppy moving around I take it outside to do nature's business. Then I bring it in and give a little food and always there is water. Then it have food on it's stomach and an empty bladder and goes back to sleep.

What did it look like? if it is yellow like slime or bile then it will be because he is hungry that is what they do when they need something to eat as their insides need to get rid of something and because there is nothing the dog throws up. The reason th puppy will just be lying in bed is simply because the pup will have no energy left because all the nutrients and energy resources come from the food. I suggest that your friend brings in a big bowl of food and places it beside the pup so as it's easy for it to reach. My puppy has done this twice before. The vet and other dog owners have proved this. The best thing for the puppy is just to eat a big bowl of food. However, if the symptoms are not as I described then of course phone a vet. If the puppy needs to see a vet there are certain vets where you just make a kind donation and animals ARE allowed on the bus as long as they behave and don't do the toilet on the bus.

I think your talking about a saint bernard? A 5 month old puppy needs to eat more than twice a day. Ask your vet about how many times to feed him. Even the older one, twice a day is not enough, that's 12 hours between feedings. Do you eat every 12 hours? I know with puppys under a year old your suppose to feed them 3-4 times a day, smaller amounts instead of a ton of food at breakfast and a ton of food 12 hours later.

I have to agree with SusiQ. We feed our 6 month puppy three times a day. If we don't - he gets listless and sickish during the day. Puppies burn so much energy (aka - calories) that they need to eat more often to keep them going.
It may, in fact, be reflux from not getting meals often enough. You don't need to feed her more, just more often.
And you are feeding the two dogs different foods, right? You're not feeding the puppy adult food yet? Puppy food has more fatty stuff in it that keeps their energy and weight gain up, so make sure she is still on puppy chow. I guess "controled growth" is probably puppy formula, so that's probably not it.
good luck!

I have a dog, and it sounds like your puppy has been eating something it's not supposed to. When he was a puupy my dog would do the same thing, he kept throwing up something white and bubbly. We found out he had been sneaking into my mom's shower and eating her soap. Try to see if she's eating anything in the middle of the night, and if that doesn't help, you should take her to the vet just to be safe.

Hi . sorry your puppy is doing this but i wonder maybe if you gave him two smaller meals in the evening it would stop this as it is possibly reflux. or even fur from washing herself during the night ..As she doesn't seem ill i cant think anything is very wrong with her but a quick check at the vets would set your mind at rest and they may have some idea how to prevent this happening again. good luck with your little girl i hope she will be fine xx

Train the female dog to puke at night. That way, it can dry up into a frisbee.
The next morning, said dog will be ready to play fetch. That plus the fact that 'as a dog returneth to its vomit' makes it a handy snack for the dog.
