Before the procedure, you will sign a consent. You will be asked to wear a hospital gown, remove all jewelries, dentures, and any metallic objects you have.Yo may be required to drink more fluids before the scan.

You will lie down on a table, then they inject an isotope into your vein. The needle prick of course will be a little bit painful but you will not feel the injection of the isotopes afterwards. (An intravenous cannula may be placed to inject the isotope). A few minutes will be allotted to allow the isotopes to travel on your bloodstreams.

The scan will be started short after. Many images will be captured by a special camera while you are lying still as the scanning goes on. You will not feel anything discomforting during the scanning.
The doctor usually reviews the images taken and sometimes additional "shots" will be required after the session. If additional isotope will be required,it will be injected in the intravenous cannula that has been placed.

The entire scanning takes about 30 minutes to one hour. The images captured will be analyzed after the scan which would include evaluation of the size, position, shape, and function of the kidneys.

When scanning is done, the intravenous cannula placed will be removed. There is no recovery time required though you may be asked to stay for a few minutes then you will allowed to go home. An appointment may be given if your scan requires a follow up. You will also be advised to drink plenty of fluids for few days and urinate frequently for the rest of the day to facilitate excretion of the radioactive material from your body.

This is how you will look like while lying down:
